NEWARK, N.J. — The Detroit Red Wings fell behind again, as has been their way lately, but this time they couldn't recover.

New Jersey scored two quick goals late in the first period Monday and went on to a 4-3 victory over the Red Wings.

This was the third consecutive game the Wings fell behind, but the second time in that stretch they couldn't recover.

Dylan Larkin cut the lead to 4-3 with his 13th goal, at 10 minutes 12 seconds of the third period. Lucas Raymond got the rebound to his own shot, and slid a pass into the slot where Larkin tapped a shot past goaltender Jacob Markstrom, who made a sliding save to prevent a Patrick Kane goal with about three minutes left in regulation time.

The Wings fell to 13-9-1 (27 points), while New Jersey moved to 14-7-1 (29 points).

James van Riemsdyk, playing in his 1,100th NHL game, scored his second goal, a power play goal, slicing the Devils' lead to 3-2 at 1:30 of the second period. Stationed in his favorite spot, net-front on the power play, van Riemsdyk scooped a loose puck and flipped high over Markstrom.

The Devils restored the two-goal lead when a Travis Hamonic turnover behind the net led to the Devils' Connor Brown, alone in front, sliding a puck past goaltender Cam Talbot at 8:38 for Brown's sixth goal.

But the difference was late in the first period. In a 1-1 game, New Jersey's Nico Hischier (seventh goal, 17:58) and Cody Glass (first goal, 19:04) scored 1:06 apart to give the Devils a two-goal lead.

Hischier took a pass from Jesper Bratt in the slot off a Devils rush, and snapped a shot past goaltender Talbot. Glass made it 3-1 deflecting a Luke Hughes shot from the point.

Alex DeBrincat (11th goal, 16:33) and New Jersey's Timo Meier (seventh, 12:54) traded early first period goals.
