Blues fall to Rangers, 3-2
Published in Hockey
It had been more than a month since the St. Louis Blues won consecutive games. The drought will continue.
With a 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers on Monday night in New York, the Blues missed an opportunity to follow up on Saturday's 2-1 win over the New York Islanders.
Dylan Holloway and Brayden Schenn scored for the Blues, while Vincent Trocheck, Alexis Lafreniere and Adam Edstrom tallied for the Rangers. Joel Hofer made 17 saves for St. Louis.
It was the fifth straight game the Blues scored two goals or fewer, the second time under coach Jim Montgomery they've endured such a stretch. It was also just the second home win for the Rangers this season.
The Blues will finish up their season-long, five-game road trip on Wednesday night against the New Jersey Devils.
Like clockwork
Holloway's goal with 2:24 left in the first period gave the Blues a 1-0 lead, marking the eighth time in the last nine games that the Blues were the first team to score. Usually, teams that score first understandably have more success, but the Blues entered Monday with a league-high eight losses (three in regulation, five in overtime/shootout) when scoring first.
Holloway initially won a battle in the corner against Taylor Raddysh, which allowed the Blues to extend possession in the offensive zone. The puck eventually found Holloway again in the left faceoff circle, where Holloway snapped a puck past Igor Shesterkin for his sixth goal of the season.
Holloway joined Justin Faulk, Jordan Kyrou, Pius Suter and Jake Neighbours for the team lead with six goals on the season.
The Blues were outshot 9-5 in the first period, but carried the 1-0 lead into first intermission.
Caught on the ice
The Rangers responded about midway through the game when Trocheck scored thanks to an extended shift in the defensive zone from Cam Fowler and Logan Mailloux. Fowler (2:20) and Mailloux (2:19) were both on the ice for more than two minutes before Trocheck's goal.
When the Blues were able to clear the zone, Rangers defenseman Adam Fox held the puck at his own blue line to prevent the St. Louis defensemen from getting to the bench. Instead they positioned themselves at the dots, while Jonny Brodzinski skated to the middle of the ice.
Fox split Fowler and Mailloux with a pass to Brodzinski, who hit a driving Trocheck as both defensemen chased Brodzinski.
Mailloux was making his return to the Blues lineup after he was recalled on Saturday from AHL affiliate Springfield, replacing Matthew Kessel in the lineup. The Blues mixed up their defensive pairs, putting Tyler Tucker with Justin Faulk and Cam Fowler with Mailloux.
The Blues also re-inserted Oskar Sundqvist on the fourth line, replacing Nick Bjugstad. Bjugstad, Kessel and Mathieu Joseph were the scratches for St. Louis on Monday night.
Out of time
Lafreniere gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead just 40 seconds into the third period, deflecting a shot from Vladislav Gavrikov from the left point. Will Cuylle won a race to a loose puck, then tapped the puck to Gavrikov. Lafreniere's deflection was close to being above the crossbar, but the goal stood as called.
New York extended its lead to 3-1 at 8:56 of the third period with Edstrom's second goal of the season. Edstrom found himself open at the side of the net after the Blues' fourth line lost its third faceoff of the same shift.
The Blues tried to make a late push to equalize, but couldn't capitalize on a four-minute power play after Neighbours. Schenn scored with 1:15 left in the game, deflecting a shot from Pavel Buchnevich from the wing.
Schenn also drew another high-sticking penalty with 2.9 seconds remaining. He won the ensuing faceoff, but it sailed past Faulk and out of the zone as tiem expired.
