Red Wings top Maple Leafs on Dylan Larkin's overtime goal
Published in Hockey
TORONTO — The Red Wings are relishing going into overtime these days.
The Wings went into overtime again Wednesday, and again secured a victory, as Dylan Larkin's goal gave the Wings a 2-1 victory.
Larkin and Moritz Seider found themselves alone, skating in on goaltender Joseph Woll, and Larkin ended things with his 26th goal at 3 minutes, 7 seconds.
The Wings (31-16-4, 64 points) are now 8-2 in overtime this season.
The Wings moved back into a points tie with Tampa Bay atop the Atlantic Division, although the Lightning have three games in hand.
Goaltender John Gibson stopped 28 shots, half of them (14) in a brilliant second period, to keep the Wings in the game. Gibson has won seven straight games and 16 of his last 18 decisions.
The Wings are now 7-1-0 in their last eight and 12-3-1 in their last 16 games.
Simon Edvinsson and Toronto's Scott Laughton traded first-period goals.
Laughton, a noted Wings nemesis, opened the scoring. Laughton found open ice in the slot and converted a feed from Calle Jarnkrok in the corner, giving the Leafs a 1-0 lead at 4:46.
How dangerous has Laughton, an effective bottom-six forward who is known more of a checker, been against the Wings? It was Laughton's 15th goal and 22nd point in his last 21 games against the Wings.
But Edvinsson got the Wings even just before the end of the period.
Larkin found Lucas Raymond up ice, and Raymond patiently controlled the puck near the boards before seeing Edvinsson skate open between the hashmarks. Edvinsson cleanly beat Woll, Edvinsson's sixth goal, with 17.1 seconds remaining in the first period.
The Wings visit Minnesota Thursday in the second game of this frigid three-game road trip. The trip ends Saturday in Winnipeg.
