Blues snap skid with 2-1 win over Islanders

The Blues snapped their four-game winless streak with a 2-1 win over the Islanders on Saturday afternoon at UBS Arena in Elmont, N.Y.
Brayden Schenn and Pius Suter scored for the Blues, who received 28 saves from Jordan Binnington. Anders Lee scored for the Islanders with 3:20 left in the third period to spoil the shutout attempt.
New York put the puck in the net with 2:06 remaining, but the apparent goal was disallowed due to goaltender interference on Kyle Palmieri. But on the same play, Justin Faulk was called for a double-minor for high-sticking to put the Islanders on the power play.
With the goalie pulled, the Islanders had a 6-on-4 advantage, but the Blues were able to kill it.
St. Louis (7-9-6) entered Saturday having lost four straight games, with three of them in overtime or a shootout. That included matching 3-2 overtime losses to start the road trip Tuesday in Toronto and Thursday in Philadelphia.
The Blues will continue the trip against the Rangers on Monday and the Devils on Wednesday.
Quick strike
Schenn gave the Blues a 1-0 lead just 42 seconds into the game, as St. Louis was able to turn defense into offense quickly. When Bo Horvat’s pass landed in the corner, Philip Broberg tracked it down and hit Dalibor Dvorsky with a cross-ice pass in the neutral zone. Dvorsky pivoted at center ice and hit Pavel Buchnevich with a pass that gave Schenn and Buchnevich a 2 on 1.
Buchnevich drew Adam Boqvist to him, leaving Schenn wide-open for a shot coming down the right wing. It was the second time this season that Schenn scored in the opening minute of the game.
Who picked up the assists might have been of greater consequence for the Blues, though.
Buchnevich’s primary assist was his first 5-on-5 point since Oct. 18 against Dallas, snapping a 16-game point drought at 5-on-5 that spanned more than a month. For Dvorsky, who had the secondary assist, it was the first helper of his NHL career. Entering Saturday, he had three goals (all on the power play) and zero assists in 13 NHL games.
Dvorsky nearly added another power-play goal to his tally on Saturday when he received a pass from Jimmy Snuggerud. But Ilya Sorokin went post to post to deny Dvorsky, and prevent the Blues from stretching their lead to 2-0.
The Islanders themselves nearly tied the game at 1 when Casey Cizikas found a loose puck behind Binnington late in the first period, but Tyler Tucker positioned himself on the goalline to prevent a possible goal for New York.
Positive second
When Suter scored with 2:09 remaining in the second period, it marked the first time in the last seven games that the Blues outscored their opponent in the middle period. In the previous six games before Saturday, the Blues were minus-6 in the second period.
St. Louis entered Saturday with the worst overall second-period goal margin in the NHL at minus-14.
Suter found and stuffed a loose puck around the crease past Sorokin after deflecting the initial shot attempt by Dylan Holloway. Jordan Kyrou recovered a rebound on the boards, then found Holloway for a shot from the slot.
For Suter, it snapped an eight-game goalless streak.
Mailloux back
One day after the Blues sent defenseman Hunter Skinner back to the AHL, they recalled Logan Mailloux from Springfield on Saturday morning. Mailloux did not play Saturday afternoon against the Islanders as the Blues again used Tyler Tucker and Matthew Kessel on the third defensive pairing.
Mailloux spent five games in Springfield and scored two goals. Blues general manager Doug Armstrong said the organization sent Mailloux down for a “reset” and for a predetermined but unannounced amount of time.
Mailloux played Friday night for the Thunderbirds against Utica, a game that ended just 18 hours before puck drop between the Blues and the Islanders on Long Island.
The only lineup change the Blues made was inserting Nick Bjugstad on the fourth line in place of Oskar Sundqvist. Bjugstad was a healthy scratch for the previous two games (and three of the last four games). He centered Alexey Toropchenko and Nathan Walker on Saturday afternoon.
Texier to terminate
The Blues placed forward Alexandre Texier on waivers for the purpose of contract termination on Saturday afternoon. When he clears waivers on Sunday, his contract will be terminated and he will become an unrestricted free agent.
In choosing to terminate his contract, Texier will forfeit about $1.6 million in salary due to him. His entire $2.1 million cap hit would come off the books for the Blues.
The Blues placed Texier on regular waivers on Thursday, and he cleared Friday. Had he been claimed by another team during that transaction, his contract would have stayed intact. Now, he’ll have the opportunity to sign a new one with another team.
The Blues gave up a 2025 fourth-round pick last summer in order to acquire Texier from Columbus. During his Blues career, he played in just 39 games and accumulated six goals and six assists. He played in just eight games this season.
