NEW YORK — A mere 24 hours after a discouraging loss, the Detroit Red Wings put together a quality victory over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

Lucas Raymond scored his fifth goal, at 16 minutes 13 seconds of the third period, breaking a tie and sending the Wings to a 2-1 victory.

Raymond carried the puck into the zone, wheeled around the net, and was given all sorts of room by Rangers defenders, sliding into the slot and whistling a shot past goaltender Jonathan Quick.

The Wings moved to 11-7-1 and in the bunched-up standings of the Atlantic Division this early in the season, slid into second place.

The Wings were 1 for 5 on the power play, including coming up empty on back-to-back power plays midway in the third period, as Quick was stellar (40 saves) and a possible repeat of the night before, when the Wings lost 5-4 to Buffalo in overtime losing a three-goal lead, was beginning to look possible.

But Raymond's goal ended any possibility of that.

The team traded power-play goals in the second period.

Alex DeBrincat opened the scoring with his ninth goal, at 9:30. After sustained pressure from the Wings, Quick got most of Raymond's shot from the dot, but the puck trickled into the crease where DeBrincat cleaned up, sliding the puck into an open net.

But the Rangers quickly answered. Cam Talbot (18 saves) made the stop on Artemi Panarin's shot from the high slot, but the puck squirted to the side where Mike Zibanejed put back the rebound, his seventh goal, at 11:59.

The Wings' next three games are at Little Caesars Arena, beginning Tuesday against the Seattle Kraken.
