SEATTLE — Jordan Eberle scored two goals as the Kraken defeated the Oilers, 3-2, on Saturday at Climate Pledge Arena.

Notable

The Kraken knocked off another team that usually has their number on Saturday.

The Kraken struck first after a back-and-forth first minute and a half of play. Matty Beniers hit Eberle on a 2-on-1 and the Kraken captain made it look easy. Berkly Catton earned the secondary assist, his second NHL point.

Coming off Thursday’s 32-save shutout of the Winnipeg Jets, Seattle goaltender Joey Daccord kept the Oilers from tying it. He stopped Noah Philp close in and slid over to deny Jack Roslovic’s backdoor bid less than a minute later. During the Kraken’s third scoreless first-period man advantage, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins hit the crossbar short-handed.

The bid for a second straight Daccord shutout ended with 4:21 left in the second period, when Evan Bouchard scored on a power-play blast to make it 2-1. The Oilers came oh-so-close at the buzzer but a spinning Daccord kicked the puck into his own goalpost, then swept the puck away from the goal line. The crowd roared him off the ice for the second intermission.

Eberle scored again in the third period, again from Beniers, but it was quickly canceled out by Edmonton’s Darnell Nurse.

The Oilers are off to a modest 4-4-1 start. That means almost nothing to the talented squad that has reached the Stanley Cup Final in back-to-back seasons. They won just five of their first 18 games in 2023-24 and six of their first 14 last season before rallying to qualify for the postseason each time.

Seattle’s 3-11-1 all-time record entering the game against the Oilers was its worst against any team after they notched a fourth win against the Vegas Golden Knights in the third game of the season. Seattle has the same record against the teams again, now a little better.

Quotable

“He’s day-to-day, but certainly progressing. He’s in practice now, and the next few days here will be a pretty telling sign. So everything’s trending, from that standpoint, very positively.” — Kraken coach Lane Lambert on winger Kaapo Kakko, who broke his hand in the preseason and was expected to return around Nov. 8.

Goal of the game

The Kraken’s fourth line made it 2-0 in the second period. Tye Kartye scored on another 2-on-1 with Ryan Winterton. Winterton had a stick in his skates but remained upright and found Kartye for the latter’s first goal of the season. Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner had a rough time with that one.

On tap

The Kraken (5-2-2) opened a five-game homestand against the Oilers. It will continue Tuesday against Montreal. The Canadiens beat the Kraken, 5-4 in overtime, on Oct. 14.
