Explosive Devils rally with power-play goals, hold off Red Wings
Published in Hockey
DETROIT — It was a fun atmosphere on a holiday weekday afternoon and an entertaining game, but the Red Wings gladly would have exchanged the result on this Black Friday.
The New Jersey Devils, with all their offensive explosiveness, were a bit too much and handed the Wings a 5-4 loss at Little Caesars Arena.
Jack Hughes scored a power-play goal — New Jersey's third of the afternoon — to gives the Devils a 5-3 lead at the 3:05 mark of the third period. Justin Holl scored his first goal with Detroit 22 seconds later, lifting a shot from the point that caromed off goaltender Jacob Markstrom and a Devils defender and getting the Wings right back in the game.
But the Devils were able to hold on for the victory, thanks to some good work from Markstrom (25 saves).
Vladimir Tarasenko (power play), Lucas Raymond and Tyler Motte had Wings goals. Raymond's goal was his seventh and stretched his streak of consecutive games with a goal to five.
The Wings were 1 for 4 on the power play but allowed the Devils to score three power-play goals on four opportunities.
Dougie Hamilton (power play), Timo Meier (power play), Nico Hischier and Stefan Noesen added Devils goals.
Hischier and Noesen scored just under six minutes apart in the latter half of the second period to swing the game around.
Hischier tied it at 3 with his 14th goal, as the Wings couldn't get the puck out of their zone. Meier ultimately gathered the puck and found Hischier cruising through the slot at the 11:10 mark.
Noesen gave the Devils a 4-3 lead at 16:49, with his 11th goal. Noesen carved out space near the crease and banged in a shot off a wild scramble in front of Wings goalie Cam Talbot.
The Wings end the three-game homestand on Sunday against Vancouver.
