Seahawks' Charles Cross out for 49ers game; Rashid Shaheed set to play
Published in Football
RENTON, Wash. — The Seahawks will again be without starting left tackle Charles Cross for Saturday night’s battle for the NFC West title against the San Francisco 49ers as he was listed as out on the team's official game status report released Thursday.
However, there is a chance that Cross' backup — Josh Jones — will be able to play, which would quell a major concern about the team’s left tackle spot. After being listed as a nonparticipant in practice on Tuesday and Wednesday, Jones, who has been dealing with ankle and knee issues, was limited on Thursday and listed as questionable heading into the 49ers game.
The Seahawks also will have the services of receiver Rashid Shaheed, who sat out the last three quarters of last Sunday’s 27-10 win at Carolina with a concussion.
Shaheed entered the week in the concussion protocol but was a full participant in practice Wednesday and Thursday and is considered good to go.
Cross is battling a hamstring injury suffered on Jason Myers' game-winning field goal against the Colts and has not played or practiced since.
Seattle also listed safety Coby Bryant (knee) as doubtful, though he was able to practice on a limited basis Thursday.
Everybody else is good go to.
Jones has started the last two games with Cross out and will do so again against the 49ers if he is able to play.
Jones’ status for the game was in question when it was revealed on Tuesday that he was battling ankle and knee injuries. He was listed as a non-participant in practice Tuesday and Wednesday.
But Jones was on the field when practice began Thursday and was listed as a limited participant.
Coach Mike Macdonald did not talk to media Thursday and will hold his final news conference of the week on Friday, so there were no further details on injury statuses.
But given the stakes of the game — both the NFC West title and the No. 1 seed in the NFC on the line — the Seahawks are likely to give it a shot with Jones if he can play. Seattle's only other players on the 53-man roster listed as tackles are rookies Amari Kight --- who signed to the 53-man roster this week off the practice squad --- and Mason Richman. Center Jalen Sundell also played some tackle in college and a few snaps with the Seahawks last year.
The 49ers may also be without their starting left tackle as 12-time Pro Bowler Trent Williams (hamstring) was one of five players the team listed as questionable.
The others are: defensive lineman Keion White (groin), cornerback Upton Stout (concussion), tight end George Kittle (ankle) and receiver Ricky Pearsall (knee/ankle).
Everybody else is considered good to go, including running back Christian McCaffrey, who did not practice on Tuesday and was limited on Wednesday with a back issue. He was a full participant Thursday and not given a game status.
Kittle was listed as a limited participant in practice all week but told reporters on Wednesday that he “absolutely’’ expects to play against the Seahawks.
Williams was injured on the first play of San Francisco’s 42-38 win over the Bears on Sunday night when he tried to race back to tackle Chicago's T.J. Edwards after he intercepted a pass that he returned for a pick-six.
San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Thursday that Williams has “made good progress,’’ though he was not able to practice all week.
Like the Seahawks, the 49ers have already qualified for the playoffs. But the winner of Saturday’s game will get a bye in the first round and then a home game in the divisional round. Shanahan said the stakes of the game mean that anyone who can play will play.
“I see this as a playoff game, too,’’ Shanahan said. “… If Trent and the doctors OK it and Trent believes he can do it and get through it, then there’s no decision on my part and we’ll definitely have him up.’’
Darnold enjoys doppleganger
The CBS broadcast of the Carolina game spotted a Seahawks fan who looks similar to Seattle quarteerback Sam Darnold and was wearing his number 14 jersey.
“That’s Stan Darnold,’’ said play-by-play man Ian Eagle.
“That was good, that was epic,’’ Sam Darnold said Thursday. “I don't know who that guy is but hopefully one day I can meet him and maybe sign a jersey for him.”
Darnold said when he was first asked about the clip after the game he was unaware what had happened.
“First someone brought it up to me and I was like, ‘I don't know what you're talking about,’’ Darnold said. “Then that was the end of the conversation, we didn't get anything from that. Then I went back, and I was just scrolling, looking at some stuff that people sent me after the game, that came up, and I thought it was pretty good.”
Could Diggs help with safety depth?
The Seahawks depth at safety took a hit this week when the team waived veteran D'Anthony Bell as part of moves to create roster spots for the signing of Kight and the return of rush end Derick Hall, then saw Bell get claimed by Carolina. The Seahawks had planned to re-sign Bell to the practice squad if he cleared waivers.
Without Bell, Seattle has four players listed as safeties on its 53-man roster --- Bryant, Julian Love, Ty Okada and Nick Emmanwori. Seattle has two others on the practice squad in rookie Maxen Hook and veteran Quandre Diggs.
Diggs, however, has been dealing with a thigh injury suffered in the only game he has played for Seattle on Nov. 30 against Minnesota after being signed to the practice squad. Diggs has been allowed to spend some time at home in Texas during his recovery but is back with the Seahawks now.
Asked if Diggs could be an option this week as safety depth if Bryant can't play, defensive coordinator Aden Durde said: “Yeah, he's just got back, so it's just him working through those things. Everyone’s in that mindset right now where they're ready to step in when needed. This is that time of year.”
NOTES
--- The Seahawks game captains are running back Zach Charbonnet, defensive lineman Leonard Williams, receiver Jake Bobo and tight end Eric Saubert.
--- The Seahawks will wear white jerseys and college navy pants for the 49ers game. As reported by the team, that is the combo the team has worn the most often for road games since 2012. The Seahawks also wore then last year at San Francisco, a 20-17 win.
