Giants 'devastated' by Cam Skattebo's gruesome ankle injury in loss to Eagles

PHILADELPHIA — New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo suffered a horrific injury to his right ankle with 8:07 remaining in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
“Did you see it?” head coach Brian Daboll said, referring to the gruesome twist of Skattebo’s right foot. “Feel absolutely terrible for the young man.”
Skattebo officially was diagnosed with a dislocated ankle, and he was promptly scheduled to undergo surgery on Sunday night at a local hospital in the Philadelphia area.
“I was devastated,” quarterback Jaxson Dart said of seeing his rookie partner in crime go down. “That’s my boy.”
Dart targeted Skattebo with a pass over the middle. Eagles linebacker Zach Baun broke up the pass, and Skattebo’s right foot and ankle got caught awkwardly under his body as he and Baun went to the ground.
Players from both the Giants and Eagles turned away in disgust when they saw Skattebo’s right foot pointed the wrong way.
Dart screamed in frustration because it was obvious immediately how badly Skattebo had been injured.
“It’s really hard to see,” wide receiver Darius Slayton said. “[He’s] a young guy that was having a heck of a year, somebody who was a unifying personality, an energetic personality. It was certainly sad to see him go down.”
Eventually, the entire Giants team crowded around Skattebo as trainers put a blow-up cast around his right foot and leg to stabilize the injury. And the Eagles crowd at Lincoln Financial Field gave him a standing ovation as the Giants running back was driven off the field.
It even appeared that Skattebo pounded his chest looking towards the Eagles players who were speaking to him before he got driven off.
Skattebo, a fourth-round pick out of Arizona State, has been a spark for the Giants alongside Dart. The running back even caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Dart to tie Sunday’s game, 7-7, late in the first quarter.
It marked his seventh touchdown of the season already.
The Giants will feel his loss in a big way, especially in the red zone. Tyrone Tracy Jr. is the next man up in the Giants’ backfield, which might now need reinforcements at the trade deadline along with the receiving corps.
Skattebo wasn’t the only significant Giants injury on Sunday, either.
Starting outside corner Cor’Dale Flott (concussion), special teams corner Art Green (hamstring) and tight end Daniel Bellinger (neck) all left the game at different points. Right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor even went into the locker room early before halftime with an ailment and was briefly replaced by Marcus Mbow before returning for the second half.
Seventh-round rookie corner Korie Black was immediately vaulted ahead of Green on the defensive depth chart after being signed off the Jets practice squad this week, and Black promptly committed a defensive pass interference penalty and was ‘Mossed’ by Eagles receiver Jahan Dotson later for a 40-yard touchdown.
