Jets start 0-6 for the 3rd time in team history after losing to Broncos in London

The nightmare start for the New York Jets continues.

The Denver Broncos (4-2) sacked quarterback Justin Fields nine times, leading to their 13-11 victory against the Jets (0-6) at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

This is the third time in team history the Jets have started a season 0-6 (1996, 2020).

“Disappointing game,” Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said. “I thought our guys fought their a—s off, obviously it wasn’t good enough. It is tough being close, at some point, we gotta finish one of these here.

“We didn’t finish the way we needed to. Give those guys a lot of credit. Defensively, they were all over the place when it comes to their defense, but I thought our defense played well and it was probably our best game.”

Fields and the Jets’ offense were downright putrid against the Broncos. They only managed 32 yards of offense at halftime and Fields completed just 5 of 7 passes for 17 yards. He finished the game 9 of 17 for 45 passing yards.

This was the second game this season Fields finished with less than 100 passing yards. He completed just 3 of 11 passes for 28 yards in the Week 2 loss to the Buffalo Bills before being knocked out in the fourth quarter due to a concussion.

The Jets finished with just -10 net passing yards, the fewest in franchise history. It was also the lowest net passing yards in any NFL game since the San Diego Chargers had -19 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs in 1998.

“I thought they did a good job on defense covering,” Fields said. “They have a good defense. I probably could have gotten the ball out on some, but I think most of the time they pretty much covered us well.”

Gang Green finished with 82 total yards, but it still had a chance to win the game with less than two minutes remaining. But on a fourth-and-8, Fields was sacked by Jonathon Cooper and Justin Strnad for the final time on Denver’s 44-yard line after Glenn decided to go for it instead of sending Nick Folk out for a 62-yard field goal. Folk was successful on all three of his field goals against the Broncos, including a 52-yarder.

After they sacked Fields, the Broncos kneeled on the ball twice to run the clock out to preserve the victory.

“I hate losing,” Jets left guard John Simpson said. “I’ve said that a bunch of times. To not crack 100 yards total is kind of crazy, but like I said, we’ve got to put our head down and keep working.”

All the issues the Jets’ offense has been facing this season came to a head on Sunday. Fields held the football too long in the pocket, which translated into multiple sacks. Also, it seemed like Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand and Glenn were hesitant to throw the ball downfield in long down situations.

The Jets registered the team’s initial first down right before the two-minute warning. They had a chance to score points before halftime, but the Jets lacked a sense of urgency.

With one minute remaining before halftime and no timeouts, the Jets let the clock run out to end the half. Breece Hall ran the ball up the middle for five yards. Then Fields was sacked on second-and-5 before he completed a six-yard pass to Josh Reynolds on third down and moved the ball to their 47 with 30 seconds remaining, but they didn’t have any timeouts remaining and the clock expired.

Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson was perturbed about the decision as he went up to Glenn to voice his displeasure before the team headed to the locker room.

“I just didn’t know exactly what the plan was,” Wilson said after the game. “Once I figured it out, I was disappointed. I’ll just say that.

“I didn’t know exactly what the plan was. Once we converted the fourth down, I just thought we were going for the, trying to make the play. Obviously, we get to another fourth down and it’s a tough spot to be in. In hindsight, I get why they did that, but in the moment, I was just like, ‘man…’ I don’t know.”

The Jets’ defense has been under fire for its play through five games. They entered Sunday’s game against the Broncos 22nd in yards and 31st in points allowed this season. However, Gang Green played arguably its best game of the season on that side of the ball.

Denver recorded just 13 points and one touchdown. The Jets also allowed just 246 yards, and the Broncos converted 33% (5 of 15) of their third-down attempts.

The Jets even had their first takeaway of the season early in the first quarter after not registering one during their first five games of the season. On the Broncos’ first possession of the game, Troy Franklin fumbled after he caught a seven-yard pass from Bo Nix and Jets safety Andre Cisco recovered the ball. That turnover led to a 52-yard field goal by Nick Folk that made the score 3-0.

The Jets also registered a safety in the third quarter and took an 11-10 lead after Quinn Meinerz held Micheal Clemons in the end zone. But Denver took the lead for good with 5:09 remaining after Will Lutz’s eventual game-winning 27-yard field goal.

“I’m still pissed,” Jets pass rusher Jermaine Johnson said. “I don’t like to f—-n lose. I just gotta be better where I can be better where I can be better.

“The defense has to be better, we can do better in all three phases, special teams, offense and we gotta keep attacking.”

The Jets will return to MetLife Stadium next week to take on the Carolina Panthers.
