Commanders' Terry McLaurin agrees to $96M extension after contentious summer

NEW YORK — Week 1 just got even tougher for the New York Giants.
Star wide receiver Terry McLaurin agreed Monday to a three-year, $96 million contract extension with the Washington Commanders, according to ESPN, putting him back on track to face the Giants in the Sept. 7 season opener.
The agreement ends a hold-in for McLaurin, who sat out of numerous team activities, including skipping the first week of training camp, as he pursued a new deal.
McLaurin, who turns 30 next month, led the Commanders last season with 1,096 receiving yards — his fifth year in a row with at least 1,000 — and caught a career-high 13 touchdowns.
The two-time Pro Bowler had been entering the final year of a three-year, $70 million contract.
McLaurin is a go-to weapon for 24-year-old quarterback Jayden Daniels, who is entering his second year in the NFL with sky-high expectations after leading the Commanders to the NFC Championship Game as a rookie last season.
The return of McLaurin solidifies a Washington receiver room that added Deebo Samuel in an offseason trade with the San Francisco 49ers.
It also ends a summer of drama in which McLaurin at one point requested a trade.
“I’ve been pretty frustrated, I’m not going to lie,” McLaurin said last month. “Everything that has transpired up to this point has been disappointing and frustrating. I want to continue my career here.”
The McLaurin deal comes days after the Commanders traded last year’s starting running back, Brian Robinson, to the 49ers for a 2026 sixth-round pick.
Washington also added left tackle Laremy Tunsil this offseason in a trade with the Houston Texans.
With the McLaurin deal done, even more attention shifts to the Dallas Cowboys, who are embroiled in their own contract dispute with All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons.
Parsons, who is entering the fifth and final year of his rookie deal, requested a trade last month and has been holding in. The 26-year-old linebacker recorded at least 12 sacks in each of his first four NFL seasons.
The Giants are set to host the Cowboys at MetLife Stadium in Week 2 for their home opener.
