Mets' Pete Alonso, Edwin Diaz named NL All-Stars, but Juan Soto is surprise snub

NEW YORK — The Mets have three All-Stars — and one notable omission.
Pete Alonso was named a National League reserve and Edwin Diaz made the pitching staff, but Juan Soto was left off of the roster in a surprise snub.
Alonso and Diaz will join Francisco Lindor, whom the fans previously voted to be the NL’s starting shortstop at the game in Atlanta.
The reserves and pitchers, who were unveiled on Sunday evening, are selected via player ballots and the MLB Commissioner’s Office.
“I’m really excited,” Alonso said. “It’s an honor for sure, and looking forward to it.”
It’s the fifth All-Star selection for Alonso, who is hitting .287 with 20 home runs, 73 RBI and a .923 OPS.
He has been an All-Star in each of the last four seasons. The slugger, 30, was a finalist to start at first base this year, but Freddie Freeman won the fan vote.
Alonso will not, however, compete in the Home Run Derby, an event he won in 2019 and 2021 and that he’s participated in five times.
“I’ve never really fully enjoyed the three off days, so I think for me, I just want to be in the best possible position to help this team win in the second half,” Alonso said. “Personally, I feel like I’m in a groove with certain things.”
Alonso said he was asked to compete in the Derby.
“I definitely will do it again,” he said. “It doesn’t mean no forever. If an All-Star game happens at Citi Field or another park that I love to hit at like Fenway or Wrigley, like, for sure.”
Diaz is an All-Star for a third time. The hard-throwing closer is 3-0 with a 1.80 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 35 innings. He has 18 saves in 19 opportunities.
The selection marks another milestone for Diaz in his comeback from the torn patellar tendon he suffered in his right knee during the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
“It feels good,” Diaz, 31, said. “That’s a personal achievement, and as a player, you want to be an All-Star, so I’m glad to represent the Mets.”
Soto was one of the event’s biggest snubs, considering he was a finalist in the fan vote to start in the outfield.
Despite getting off to a slow start in his first season with the Mets, Soto is hitting .263 with 21 home runs, 51 RBI and a .904 OPS. He was the NL Player of the Month for June.
Ronald Acuña Jr. of the Atlanta Braves and Pete Crow-Armstrong and Kyle Tucker of the Chicago Cubs are set to start in the National League outfield.
Corbin Carroll of the Arizona Diamondbacks; Kyle Stowers of the Miami Marlins; James Wood of the Washington Nationals; and Fernando Tatis Jr. of the San Diego Padres were named outfield reserves on Sunday.
MLB ensures every team has at least one All-Star, and Stowers is Miami’s lone representative. Soto, 26, could still go as a roster replacement if someone opts against going.
The All-Star game is scheduled for July 15 at Truist Park in Atlanta.
