Gadgets: Safe portable power
Published in Science & Technology News
Safe portable charging isn’t optional; it’s essential. That is exactly what you get with BMX’s new SolidSafe portable power line featuring advanced magnetic solid-state battery packs built with safety at the core.
Inside each battery is what SolidSafe calls next-generation solid-state cells, not traditional lithium-ion batteries. SolidSafe states that the new design eliminates flammable liquid electrolytes, thereby reducing fire, overheating and swelling risks associated with other portable batteries. This new battery style will give you up to twice the lifespan of other batteries.
To demonstrate the safety features, unique BMX testing of the new batteries included engineers drilling a fully charged SolidSafe unit straight through the battery, with no smoke, swelling or ignition. The drilling, cutting and bending demonstration was stated to underscore the resilience of solid-state chemistry, which resists overheating, leaking, and swelling even when subjected to physical damage.
BMX stated on their site that SolidSafe batteries have significantly less liquid electrolyte than traditional lithium-ion power banks. This will reduce conditions that can lead to thermal runaway and fire. Testing showed that the stress that would normally cause lithium-ion batteries to ignite did not occur with the new design.
Among the new batteries is the SolidSafe 5K (5,000 mAh), with a single USB-C port and Qi2 magnetic (wireless) charging for Qi-enabled devices. You’ll get up to 15 watts of charging from the Qi2 and 30 watts with the in/out USB-C port. Two devices can be charged at once, and it is rated for over 1,000 charging cycles.
There is a full-color LCD display at the bottom of the SolidSafe 5K ($79), showing the output power and the remaining power in the battery. An attached USB-C lanyard is included for charging your devices or recharging the battery, and the battery supports pass-through charging. The slim, 0.46-inch body is built with an aluminum housing, designed for natural heat dissipation and durability.
The new line of batteries also includes a 10K ($99) and 10K+ ($129) model, all with 15-watt Qi2 magnetic wireless charging, 30W USB-C fast in/out, an LCD display, and a USB-C lanyard cable. Qi2 (15 watts) is up to twice as fast as Qi1 (7.5 watts) models. The 10K+ model has a built-in microSD memory card port.
BMX says on their site that the new SolidSafe portable batteries meet TSA power bank regulations to carry on airplanes. The products are covered by a 2-year limited warranty.

Tessan’s AC-powered TS-CS03 9-in-1 desktop charging station charges all your devices simultaneously and is designed for vertical, space-saving use.
The high-speed charger is built like a mini tower with ports on the sides, including three AC outlets, three USB-A ports, and three USB-C ports. It can supply up to 100 watts of power delivery, and with USB-C, it will deliver 65-watt fast charging up to five times faster than a regular USB port. Tessan testing shows it charges a cell phone to 80% in as little as 30 minutes.
It is built with GaN III technology (Gallium Nitride) to ensure a safe, energy-efficient charge with dynamic temperature sensors for heat management. Protective safety features include protection against overcharging, overcurrent, over-voltage and over-amperage. The body of the TS-CS03 is built with flame-retardant material.
The portable charging tower stands about five inches high and has a flat base that fits in the palm of your hand. It includes anti-slip rubber feet to keep it in place. A five-foot AC adapter is included to power the charging station for phones, laptops, tablets, game controllers, digital cameras or anything that needs a boost. The Tessan site has an extensive chart showing power distribution by the ports you are using.
