SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Mexican governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño met with Gov. Gavin Newsom in Sacramento last week to advance a new climate partnership between California and the Mexican state of Sonora.

Newsom and Durazo Montaño signed on March 17 a new partnership advancing cross-border action for cleaner air and clean energy.

The four-year partnership between both states advances California’s goals for the development of renewable energy resources, building supply-chain resilience and clean transportation.

“California and Sonora share the common challenge of adapting to a hotter, drier world. But we also share a common drive to advance real solutions,” Newsom said in a statement.

Newsom said the partnership brings both states “together to clean the air and expand access to more clean energy.”

According to the Memorandum of Understanding signed by both governors, Sonora and California Energy Commission (CEC) officials met in Mexico City in April 2023 and in Sacramento in June 2023 to discuss the Sonora Plan and subnational cooperation between California and Sonora on clean energy.

California is “a leader in economic growth and actions against climate change,” Durazo Montaño said in a statement.

Durazo Montaño said the agreement between the states is a joined effort to “ensure that families live in a prosperous region, with a better environment and technological development.”

California has partnered with other countries on clean energy.
