Gadgets: A charger that keeps its cool
Published in Science & Technology News
A big thing about our portable charging devices is that they get hot. It's not good for you, and it's most likely not good for the charging device. That's what caught my interest with Aukey's new MagFusion Pro line of portable wireless chargers with active cooling. Their mission is to bring the most innovative mobile accessories to the consumer charging market, and the cooling chargers certainly are unique.
The pocket-sized Aukey LC-G10 MagFusion GameFrost Qi2 active cooling wireless charger has a built-in system that allows it to charge your device while also safely keeping it cool. According to Aukey, this is something they call Omnia-Frez technology, designed to take care of overheating issues we often get with fast, wireless charging devices.
Combining semiconductor cooling and fan cooling technology significantly reduces charging temperatures compared to traditional wireless chargers. This makes your device safer to charge and keeps it healthier for a longer lifespan. A real-time LED display on the charger shows you what the actual charging temperature is.
The compact 0.99-by-2.48-by-2.48-inches/3.32-ounce rounded MagSafe MagFusion GameFrost charger ($42.99) looks like a smart home thermostat. It has a single USB-C port for input power and up to 15 watts of fast wireless charging output. Aukey states that the quiet fans are rated to reduce charging temperatures up to 68 degrees cooler compared to traditional wireless non-cooling chargers.
There are three cooling modes, all controlled with a single button: common, medium and freezing. The modes are described to fit different scenarios where you might be using the charger and need to keep the device cooler. For example, using the charger while gaming will keep the phone working harder, and in turn, the charging can keep it cooler, compared to just nightstand charging.
The MagSafe MagFusion GameFrost charger doubles as a hands-free stand, which can be put in standby mode to just work as a phone holder. Another option is to turn off the charging function with the press of a button while still keeping it attached to the MagSafe connection and keeping the cooling fan on.
The Aukey MagFusion Dash Pro Qi2 (3.95-by-2.48-by-2.48-inches) active cooling wireless charging phone mount brings safe cooling charging to your vehicle with a secure air vent mounting system. In seconds, the Dash Pro attaches to a car's air vent (I tried it on several car makes, and all worked fine) for a hands-free charge.
Driving city streets, taking sharp turns and driving at higher speeds was no challenge for the mount; it always stayed in place, safely gripping the air vents and keeping the smartphone attached with a strong magnetic attraction. While mounted, you get a full view of your smartphone with a 360-degree adjustable viewing angle. The MagFusion Dash Pro ($40.99) charges Qi-enabled smartphones with fast Qi2 charging. Inside is the same quiet active cooling system for the safe cooler 15-watt charge, and it also prolongs battery lifespan through efficient heat dissipation.
Another Aukey device with an active cooling system is the MagFusion 3-in-1 Pro Qi2 Active Cooling Wireless Charging Station ($129.99). This system allows for charging a smartphone, Apple Watch and true wireless earbud cases.
The Qi2 and MFW certified compatibility vertical charger holds a watch on top for a 5-watt fast charge, attaches MagSafe compatible smartphones on the side for a 15-watt fast wireless charge, and true wireless earbuds on the base for a 5-watt charge. The MagFusion 3-in-1 Pro (6.06-by-4.02-by-4.55-inches) is built with a stylish look, and everything is secure with all three charges simultaneously. It is built with recyclable aircraft-grade aluminum and an Apple-esque gray metallic finish.
Inside the MagFusion 3-in-1 Pro is the active cooling system for a safe, cool charge. It allows for an adjustable viewing angle of 30 degrees for the smartphone.
