Tips for hiking with your pup
Published in Cats & Dogs News
Fall is approaching, which means the start of fall activities. Most dog owners would agree that your canine companion makes for a willing and eager hiking buddy. Going for hikes with your dog is a great way to get some exercise while enjoying all the season has to offer.
The American Kennel Club offers tips on how to make your hiking trip the smoothest it can be.
Research your breed. Before you hit the trail, be sure to research your breed to make sure the amount of exercise matches their breed type. A high energy breed, like a border collie, may have a much easier time on a hike than a lower energy breed. The exercise limits of your dog are an important factor to keep in mind before choosing what hike to take. Research your breed and check with your veterinarian to make sure your plans are in line with your dog’s physical limits.
Keep them on leash. Many trails require dogs to be on leash, but even if your trail doesn’t have a leash requirement, it is still a good idea to have it with you anyway. Keeping your dog on a leash will steer them way from anything along the trail, if need be, such as poisonous plants or other animals.
Bring water and a travel bowl. It is important that both you and your pup stay hydrated during your hike. Bring a water and a portable bowl to give your dog every half hour.
Bags for cleanup. Make sure you are being mindful of your surroundings and always bring bags with you to clean up after your dog. Even if you don’t think you will be out that long, your dog will eventually need a bathroom break and it is better to be prepared with cleanup bags.
First aid kit. It is best to always have essentials with you in case of an emergency. Items such as a small tube of antibiotic cream for minor cuts, roll-on bandages, and a clean bandana to use as a tourniquet in case of major bleeding or bone fractures are must-haves.
