How much should I worry about little sins I commit along the way since I’m already a Christian?

on

From the writings of the Rev. Billy Graham

Q: My closest friend, who is a minister, told me that I shouldn’t worry about little sins I commit along the way because I’m already a Christian. My Bible study leader says that the Bible tells us to examine ourselves and repent for things we do that don’t please God. Which is it? – E.O.

A: Believers do sin after salvation, but those who are saved do not “practice” sin and enjoy its pleasures. The true believer will be convicted of sin that leads to repentance so that we can have the joy Jesus promises.

The Bible also tells us to examine ourselves (see 2 Corinthians 13:5). God will show us where we are wrong and what is blocking the joy we should experience as Christians. Perhaps we find ourselves being jealous or displaying anger. We may carry a grudge against someone and have unforgiving attitudes. Perhaps we are too easily offended or may be puffed up with pride. Dishonesty, gossiping, criticism, worry, lustful thoughts, unbelief, prayerlessness, neglect of God’s Word – any of these things can prevent the joy of salvation from swelling up in our souls, hindering the Holy Spirit from taking possession of our lives.

Many things could be hidden from others, but never from God. When we confess these things by name, this is the first step to victory. We shouldn’t say, “Lord, forgive my sins.” Let’s define them because God already knows. We must ask Him to give us the power and the strength to overcome. We must take Him at His word.

We make a mockery of God’s forgiveness when we deliberately engage in sin because we think He will forgive it later. We must take sin seriously and be on guard against its tug. We must learn to take the Holy Spirit seriously, calling on Him every day to help us overcome the power of sin present in the world.
