The Eagles’ “Greatest Hits” has officially become the greatest-selling album in American history.

The legendary rock band behind hits like “Hotel California,” “Take It Easy” and “Desperado” revealed on Thursday that the compilation album, “Their Greatest Hits (1971-75),” was awarded Quadruple Diamond certification by the Recording Industry Association of America for sales of more than 40 million copies.

The 10-song opus is the first-ever record to reach such a feat, securing its standing as the country’s bestselling album of all time. It outpaced other major sellers by Michael Jackson (“Thriller”), AC/DC (“Back in Black”) and Fleetwood Mac (“Rumours”).

Released by Asylum Records in 1976, “Their Greatest Hits” was also the first album to ever be certified platinum by RIAA, which has tracked record sales since 1952. The set spent five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard albums charts 50 years ago, and was added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry in 2017.

In commemoration of the album’s 50th anniversary, a reissue of “Their Greatest Hits” on crystal clear vinyl will be released on Feb. 13. Preorders are available now on the band’s website.

The Eagles were founded in 1971 by Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner. Linda Ronstadt tapped them as her backing band for her third solo studio album in 1972 before they took off with their debut later that year.

The “Take It to the Limit” hitmakers were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 and were ranked as one of Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Artists of All Time” in 2010.
