Russian forces attacked Ukraine’s capital and other targets with missiles and drones overnight, days before the Kremlin’s full-scale war on its neighbor enters a fifth year.

Strikes with some 50 missiles of various types and nearly 300 attack drones “targeted Kyiv and the region, and the Dnipro, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Poltava and Sumy regions,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on the X platform. “The main target of the attack was the energy sector. Ordinary residential buildings were also damaged, and there is damage to the railway.”

The large strike on Kyiv wounded at least two civilians, including a child, local authorities said on Sunday. One man was killed in Kyiv region and 15 people injured, including four children, according to the governor. Attacks knocked out power in some areas as temperature plunged to -11 C (12F).

Separately, Russia on Saturday used ballistic missiles to destroy a factory of the U.S. food and beverage company Mondelez International that produces Oreo biscuits in northern Ukrainian city of Trostianets, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on X.

“This is not a military target but a factory that has operated since the 1990s, producing globally known brands, employing Ukrainians, contributing to our and American economy,” Sybiha said.

“When Russian missiles hit such sites, they are not only targeting Ukraine. They are targeting American business interests in Europe.”

The strikes follow trilateral talks between Russia, Ukraine and the U.S. in Geneva last week, held in an effort to make progress toward a peace deal. Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine will enter its fifth year on Tuesday. Major unresolved issues continue to divide the warring parties, including Russia’s demand to be granted full control over parts of Ukraine’s east that it hasn’t captured in fighting that goes back to 2014.

U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff told Fox News Channel on Saturday that he, together with President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, have made proposals to Moscow and Kyiv that could lead to another meeting within three weeks. That could ultimately result in a summit between Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, he added.

“It might end up being a trilateral at some point with the president, we’ll have to see,” Witkoff said, referring to Trump. “He doesn’t want to come to a meeting unless he feels that he can consummate this thing and get the best result.”

Russia has attacked Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure throughout the winter with cruise and ballistic missiles along with explosive-laden drones, leaving millions of people without power and heating in sub-zero temperatures. Ukraine has retaliated with attacks on Russian fuel producing facilities, oil terminals, ports and parts of the power grid in southern and border regions.

The latest strikes by Russia cut off power in several regions, including Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kyiv and Poltava, according to the state-run energy grid company Ukrenergo.

Meanwhile, parts of the Zaporizhzhia region in Ukraine’s southeast, which Russia illegally annexed in 2022 but doesn’t fully control, was left without electricity on Sunday as a result of a Ukrainian strike, according to Yevgeny Balitsky, the Moscow-installed head of the region.

“There has been a repeated power outage in the Zaporizhzhia region,” Yevgeny Balitsky, the Moscow-installed head of the region said, as reported by Tass. “Socially significant facilities are connected to backup power sources. Generators are working to provide water supply, as well as the functioning of critical infrastructure.”

One man died and a woman was hospitalized in Russia’s Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, as a result of attacks, according to regional governor

In the afternoon, within an hour, 11 drones heading for Moscow were downed, Interfax reported, citing Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. Moscow-area airports continue to coordinate closely with local authorities after temporary flight restrictions were lifted.

Separately, explosions were heard overnight in the major western city of Lviv, close to Ukraine’s border with European Union member Poland. Blasts happened after police arrived to a shop downtown following a call about a robbery, Lviv region governor Maksym Kozytskyi said on Telegram, adding that one policewoman was killed.

The number of wounded in “a terrorist attack” increased to 25 people, Zelenskyy said later. A suspect has been detained, he added.

Saturday Zelenskyy said that Ukraine’s security forces had “neutralized Russian mercenaries preparing assassination attempts against our citizens.”

Zelenskyy said the targets of the foiled attacks had been “rather high-profile names,” without providing more detail.
