GM posts 2025 sales gain, powered by trucks, SUVs
Published in Business News
General Motors Co. on Monday reported that it sold more vehicles in the United States than any other automaker in 2025, outpacing its longtime top competitor Toyota Motor Corp. and slightly growing its market share.
GM sold about 2.85 million vehicles in 2025, a 5.5% increase compared to 2024 despite the chaos of tariffs and sweeping changes in federal policies on electric vehicles, tailpipe emissions and fuel economy standards.
Toyota ― the No. 2 top-selling automaker in the United States ― reported sales of 2.5 million in 2025.
Crosstown rival Ford Motor Co. has not yet reported its final 2025 sales numbers. Stellantis NV sold 1.26 million over the year and a total of 332,321 vehicles in the fourth quarter.
“Demand for our brands and products is strong at every price point, and we are well‑positioned to build on this momentum in the year ahead,” Duncan Aldred, GM senior vice president and president of North America, said in a statement.
Chevrolet's crossover SUV Equinox and pickup truck Silverado LD, as well as the GMC Sierra LD pickup, led GM sales, a signal of the continuing popularity of SUVs and pickups. Other top performers included the Silverado HD and the compact SUV Chevrolet Trax, one of few offerings available under $30,000.
GM estimated its market share grew less than a percentage point from 2024 to 17% in 2025.
GM's annual sales grew despite a dip in the fourth quarter compared to what the company described as "a very strong" last quarter in 2024. GM sold 703,000 vehicles between October and December 2025, compared to about 755,000 over the same time period in 2024.
