MIAMI — Defending MLS champion Inter Miami opened preseason training camp on Saturday and managing owner Jorge Mas was there to get a first glimpse of the 2026 team, which includes several new players following the retirement of Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

Mas provided updates on negotiations to acquire MLS Defender of the Year Tristan Blackmon from the Vancouver Whitecaps and Monterrey striker German Berterame. He also addressed reports that Telasco Segovia was being pursued by other clubs and confirmed that Tadeo Allende will stay with Miami in 2026.

“We had conversations with Vancouver and I reiterate what the Vancouver CEO said, that we made an offer the player, but he remains their player, so for now, that matter is closed,” Mas said.

Mas confirmed multiple media reports from Mexico and ESPN that Inter Miami is in contract talks with Monterrey regarding Berterame, an Argentina-born forward who plays for the Mexican national team. Inter Miami is reportedly willing to pay the release clause to get the 27-year-old. Media reports say that fee is valued at $15 million.

“First of all, German Berterame is a great player,” Mas said. “We had a chance to face him in the Concacaf Champions Cup the year before last. He is a great player, and we aspire to have a great roster. There is an offer from Inter Miami for German Berterame. We’ll see how that unfolds in the next 24 to 36 hours. I repeat that we aspire to have an extraordinary roster to give Masche [coach Javier Mascherano] the tools he needs and [Berterame] is a quality player that deserves to be on our roster.”

Monterrey sporting director Jose Antonio Noreiga also confirmed the negotiations to reporters in Mexico.

“I can tell you and confirm that there has been an approach [from Inter Miami] and a proposal that is interesting to Berterame,” told reporters in Mexico.

“It interests German, and it could be interesting for us. If we decide that the offer is interesting and that German leaves, we will do everything possible and we are already working on it to replace him.”

Berterame joined the Monterrey Rayados in 2022 and has scored 67 goals with 15 assists in 152 games across all competitions.

As for Segovia, Mas said he is not for sale.

“We have had offers for multiple Inter Miami players and we are not in the market to move Telasco,” Mas said. “He is a great player who has helped this club a lot and will continue to do so. We count on him being part of our roster for the entire season.”

Mas confirmed that Tadeo Allende, who scored an MLS-record nine goals during the playoffs, will remain with the team. He was on loan from Spanish club Celta de Vigo and the two teams reached an agreement for the transfer, Mas said. He is expected to arrive in camp in the next few days.

“Tadeo was a key player for us, it was extraordinary what he did at the end of the year, so yes, he will be on our roster,” Mas said.

Mas also said that more preseason games will be added beyond the three-game South America tour to Peru, Colombia and Ecuador.

Messi was at training camp, along with his good friends Luis Suarez and Rodrigo De Paul. Suarez, who turns 39 next week, signed a new one-year contract for this season. Inter Miami exercised the permanent transfer option on De Paul, who was on loan from Atletico Madrid.

Two of the new signees, Sergio Reguilon and David Ayala met with the media. They wore the team’s new training gear, which is sponsored by Ergo Next. Earlier this week, Lowe’s renewed its partnership with Inter Miami and will be an official sleeve sponsor and a founding partner of Miami Freedom Park.

Reguilon, a Spanish left back, was signed to replace Alba. He previously played for Real Madrid and Tottenham and was a free agent after leaving Tottenham last May.

“I did have some time off from competition, but I have been working hard every day, I am in great shape, very healthy and very excited to start with my new teammates,” Reguilon said. “I had some personal problems, so I have been absent for a bit, but now it’s time to prove myself on the field.”

Ayala comes from the Portland Timbers and considers Mascherano one of his idols and mentors. Inter Miami paid $2 million to get him.

“I’m very happy to be here and when I first heard the news about this opportunity, I was excited,” Ayala said. “I am eager to get started. I know I’m coming to a very competitive club that just won the MLS Cup.”
