Blues ride depth scoring to 3-2 win over Flames

ST. LOUIS — The race to the bottom sped up a little Tuesday night.
Fortunately for the St. Louis Blues, it wasn't them sinking in the standings.
In a matchup between the bottom two teams in the NHL, the Blues beat the Calgary Flames 3-2 at Enterprise Center.
The win was the fourth time in the last five games the Blues (6-8-3) picked up at least a point, and it came against a Flames (4-12-2) team that was shut out in its last two games.
Dylan Holloway, Matthew Kessel and Nathan Walker scored for the Blues, who received 37 saves from goaltender Jordan Binnington. In playing his 348th game for the Blues, Binnington moved past Mike Liut for most games played by a Blues goalie.
The Blues continue their homestand on Friday night against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Sundqvist makes an impact
Forward Oskar Sundqvist had two assists in his first game back in the lineup after he was scratched in back-to-back games in Buffalo and vs. Seattle. Sundqvist picked up the primary assist on Kessel's first-period goal and the secondary assist on Walker's second-period goal.
Sundqvist is the latest Blue to return to the lineup with something to prove after a healthy scratch.
Last week, Mathieu Joseph was scratched in Washington, but had three points the next game vs. Buffalo. Jordan Kyrou was scratched vs. the Sabres but then scored a go-ahead goal in the third period vs. the Kraken.
Sundqvist sprung Kessel on the rush with a cross-ice outlet pass after Kessel blocked Nazem Kadri's shot. As soon as Kessel blocked the shot, he sprinted out of the zone to lead the rush. Kessel's shot beat Dustin Wolf blocker-side at 13:43 of the first period to give St. Louis a 2-0 lead.
It was Kessel's second career NHL goal.
Sundqvist helped give the Blues a 3-0 lead at 7:20 of the second when his perfectly weighted flip pass out of the defensive zone landed for Alexey Toropchenko on the rush. Toropchenko drove the net, but couldn't beat Wolf.
Walker followed up the attempt, and crashed into Flames defenseman Joel Hanley, and then Wolf. The puck laid at the side of the net, and Walker dug it out and finished a backhand.
Flames coach Ryan Huska delayed the game slightly to decide whether or not to challenge the goal for goaltender interference, but ultimately chose not to.
Kessel and Walker's goals supported Holloway's power-play goal at 10:59 of the first period that gave the Blues a 1-0 lead. Holloway tipped Justin Faulk's point shot after Walker drew a tripping penalty on Samuel Honzek.
Pius Suter had the secondary assist on the Holloway goal, marking his 10th point of the season. He was the first Blue to reach double-digit points, and St. Louis was the final NHL team with a player to reach 10 points.
Kessel nearly had another goal in the third period, but a Blues goal was disallowed for goaltender interference when Walker battled for a loose puck.
Making a charge
After falling behind 3-0, the Flames scored twice in 25 seconds in the second period to trim the Blues lead to 3-2 entering the third period.
Matt Coronato ripped a shot on the rush that whizzed past Jordan Binnington on the far side with 5:56 left in the second. Coronato was alone in the neutral zone as Cam Fowler was stuck deeper in the offensive zone for the Blues.
Rasmus Andersson's point shot appeared to deflect off of Tyler Tucker's stick and went over Binnington's left shoulder with 5:31 left in the second period.
Calgary had a power play towards the end of the second period that bled into the third, but failed to capitalize on Walker's tripping penalty of Kadri.
Old habits
Blues fans have long memories, it seems. Whenever he touched the puck on Tuesday night, Kadri was booed by the Enterprise Center crowd, the latest reminder of Kadri's run-in with Jordan Binnington in the second round of the 2022 playoffs.
Kadri, then with Colorado, collided with Binnington during Game 3 of the series against the Blues, and Binnington did not play the remainder of the playoffs. The Blues lost in six games vs. the Avalanche.
Kadri is in the fourth year of a seven-year contract with Calgary that carries a $7 million cap hit.
