Wild crater in 6-0 loss to Senators that ends three-game winning streak

KANATA, Ontario — The Wild were machine-like in their execution in front of Marc-Andre Fleury to help the goaltender commemorate his final game in his native Quebec with a shutout over Montreal.
But the Wild didn’t provide Filip Gustavsson with the same precision during his own trip down Memory Lane.
After being so locked in vs. the Canadiens on Thursday, the Wild were much looser against the Senators, and their 6-0 malfunction against Gustavsson’s former team Saturday at Canadian Tire Centre cost them their three-game win streak ahead of their road trip finale.
Ottawa capitalized three times during a five-minute power play to start the third period, including once on a 5-on-3, after Ryan Hartman was ejected for intent to injure.
Gustavsson, who valiantly tried to avoid a blowout through the first two periods, was on the hook for all that offense and finished with a season-high 46 saves compared to just 16 by the Senators’ Leevi Merilainen en route to his third shutout of the season.
Despite these teams facing each other only twice a regular season, their matchup was testy from the first period on after fans booed during the U.S. national anthem; President Donald Trump’s tariffs went into effect Saturday, and he has talked of Canada becoming the 51st state.
After an altercation between Yakov Trenin and Zack Ostapchuk, Ottawa received the more severe punishment to put the Wild on the power play.
But it was the Senators, not the Wild, who took advantage: Josh Norris caught the Wild sleeping on an Ottawa clear, racing to the puck first before wiring it by Gustavsson with 1:59 left in the first period.
A pair of goals 1 minute, 7 seconds apart in the second tightened the Senators’ control.
During 4-on-4 action, Tim Stutzle buried a give-and-go with Brady Tkachuk with a net-front redirect at 7:38 before Michael Amadio lifted in a behind-the-net pass at 8:45.
Later in the period, Hartman was penalized for roughing Stutzle, who was also reprimanded for slashing Hartman. But the Wild were dealt an extra penalty because Hartman was called for embellishment; he fell to the ice after the slash.
Near the end of the second, Hartman and Stutzle reunited for a faceoff and after the draw, Hartman pushed Stutzle down to the ice.
After a review, Hartman was assessed a five-minute match penalty for intent to injure.
A match penalty automatically is reviewed by the NHL Department of Player Safety, which means Hartman could receive further discipline.
Last season, Hartman was suspended three games for unsportsmanlike conduct after throwing his stick in the direction of officials during a 2-1 loss to Vegas on March 30. That was Hartman’s fourth suspension, and his status as a repeat offender was taken into consideration.
Ottawa put the finishing touches on its rout during the power play.
Jake Sanderson connected on a point shot 38 seconds into the third, Tkachuk threw a shot through Gustavsson by 1:37, and then during a 5-on-3 (Jake Middleton went to the penalty box for elbowing), Drake Batherson sunk a one-timer from the left faceoff circle at 2:52.
The Senators finished 3 for 8 on the power play, while the Wild were 0 for 3. Their 16 shots matched the team’s season low; the 52 Gustavsson saw was a season high.
Ottawa swept the season series after also defeating the Wild, 3-1, on Dec. 29.
