Ed Graney: Las Vegas destined to be in Super Bowl rotation

PHOENIX — It was as obvious as the Las Vegas Aces winning another WNBA championship when skating through the Phoenix Mercury after leading a best-of-seven series 3-0.

A no-brainer, if you will.

The Super Bowl will return to Las Vegas in 2029 with the Roman numerals LXIII attached.

NFL owners approved Las Vegas on Monday as the host city.

It should signal the beginning of a long and consistent relationship between the NFL and its most lavish spectacle being staged in Southern Nevada.

Which means to say Las Vegas should now officially be in the regular rotation for hosting the game.

Which appears to be the case.

This was NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to local leaders after the first Super Bowl at Allegiant Stadium in February of 2024: “The hospitality here, you outdid it. I think it’s safe to say the NFL looks forward to coming back.”

And now it will.

And should do so again and again and so on.

It makes too much sense for Las Vegas not to join other warm-weather cities the NFL sends its most important game most often. To the Miami’s and New Orleans and Los Angeles of the world.

The NFL doesn’t admit to there being a regular rotation for certain cities every five years or so, but history debates that fact.

The experience here in 2024 was as memorable as it was well-run. Things were done right. Things were done as only Las Vegas can. Things were pulled off at the highest of levels.

No city comes together as well as Las Vegas when hosting such major events. None has the infrastructure and experience to do so. This is what Southern Nevada does best.

Many doubted Las Vegas could pull off such a gigantic challenge. They were convinced failure in some form or fashion would arrive. They were wrong to the ultimate degree in 2024.

John Saccenti is executive director of the Las Vegas Bowl and believes from his own experience and those he talked to in the industry, 2004 was hands-down the best Super Bowl imaginable.

And that despite such a high bar being set, this next venture into hosting the game in 2029 can match such a challenge.

“The NFL has to obviously rotate the game around, but (2024) was an absolute home run,” Saccenti said. “I would see this coming now every 4-5 years because of the way our city is set up, the proximity from the stadium to the resorts to the convention space.

“We can handle everything and anything.”
