Ed Graney: Klint Kubiak wins people over with hard work, not words

LAS VEGAS — He’s all about football. That’s the most important thing.

Klint Kubiak wasn’t going to dazzle at a news conference Tuesday while being introduced as the new Las Vegas Raiders coach. Wasn’t going to drop many one-liners or jokes or bring the room down. That’s not him.

Antonio Pierce won the news conference.

Pete Carroll won the news conference.

Look where that got the Raiders.

Kubiak should only be concerned with winning games. He’s pretty straightforward on all things, and that’s a breath of fresh air.

Focus on the players and rebuilding and the draft and how best to turn 3-14 around. Focus on what matters most.

“It was so important to find the right person to move this organization forward,” general manager John Spytek said. “We learned a ton, and it ultimately led us to Coach Kubiak being the next leader. He stood out with his leadership, with his humility, with his work ethic, with his intelligence. It made what was a difficult decision easy for us.”

It’s no surprise that Kubiak hit it off so well with minority owner Tom Brady during the interview process.

Lots about football.

“He made the mistake of giving me his cell phone number,” Kubiak said. “I’m going to be calling him a lot. We have different offensive backgrounds and how we’re going to pull ideas from (each other). He’s obviously the greatest who has ever done it and the passion he spoke with got me excited about continuing to work with him.”

Kubiak was in Seattle on Wednesday for a parade to celebrate the Seahawks win over New England in Super Bowl LX.

Then, the now-former offensive coordinator of the Seahawks will return to Las Vegas to begin his new job. To begin hiring a staff and watching tape and working with Spytek on all sorts of different areas.

There is a draft in April and the Raiders own the first overall pick. They also own $90 million in cap space.

There are ways to improve this team immediately.

To begin the rebuild in a positive manner.

Think about it: Kubiak is the team’s sixth head coach (including interims) since the team moved to Las Vegas. There would seem to be a battle now between his creativity and how much the Raiders have lost of late.

Those who came before couldn’t get the job done.

Will he be able to?

Spytek used the right word. Humility. Kubiak sure doesn’t seem like a coach who believes he has all the answers. He wants to continue learning from others. He respects the history and tradition of the franchise.

“This is the silver and black, this is the Raiders,” he said. “I want to be part of furthering that history … You have to earn a second game in this league. If you don’t take care of business, you get chewed up and spit out real quick.

“I’m going to have to earn the credit to coach this whole season and the next season. I don’t take for granted how long I’m going to be here. I know I have to earn it every day.”

Crazy. He grew up a Broncos fan as his father, Gary, played for Denver before holding various staff positions with the team, including as head coach when directing it to a victory in Super Bowl L.

Now, Klint Kubiak (also a former assistant coach for the Broncos) is on the other side of the coin, leading one of Denver’s chief rivals. Now, he is like his father (who was part of four Super Bowl victories) in owning a shiny ring.

Now, he faces the most difficult task of his coaching life.

A man of few words, he won’t lack for hard work.

And there is plenty of it ahead.

“It’s less about scheme and more about the person,” Spytek said. “We were very thoughtful about how we approached the kind of coach and man we were looking for to lead this organization on a daily basis … He was just the right person.”

It’s not about winning a news conference.

It’s about winning games.

It appears nobody knows this better than Kubiak.

Football. It’s all about football.

Leave the rah-rah stuff to others.
