Reports: Patriots RB Antonio Gibson out for season with torn ACL
Published in Football
BOSTON — The New England Patriots endured their first season-ending injury in Sunday’s upset win over the Buffalo Bills.
Running back Antonio Gibson suffered a torn ACL in the 23-20 Week 5 win and will miss the rest of the season, according to multiple reports.
Gibson suffered the injury on a kick return. Gibson took a hard shot to his legs on the play, which resulted in him fumbling the football. Replays showed that Gibson might have suffered the injury before contact, however.
The Patriots currently are left with Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson at running back on their 53-man roster. The team also has Terrell Jennings on their practice squad for additional depth.
Gibson first joined the Patriots last season as a free agent. He finishes the 2025 season with 25 carries for 106 yards and a touchdown, two catches for 6 yards and 12 kick returns for 342 yards with a touchdown.
The Patriots will need to keep using Stevenson as their early-down rusher despite his fumbling issues. Stevenson has three fumbles in five games and 10 fumbles over his last 20 games.
Henderson has been inconsistent in pass protection. The Patriots, overall, have 476 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 127 carries. Their 3.7 yards per rushing attempt ranks 28th in the NFL.
