BOSTON — The New England Patriots have a new No. 3 quarterback, and it’s a player they recently watched tear their defense apart.

The Patriots claimed quarterback Tommy DeVito off waivers from the New York Giants. DeVito was 17 of 20 for 198 yards with three touchdowns in the Giants’ preseason finale against the Patriots. DeVito, who’s nicknamed “Tommy Cutlets,” joins Drake Maye and Joshua Dobbs on the Patriots’ quarterback depth chart.

The Patriots also claimed cornerback Charles Woods from the Rams.

One spot on the 53-man roster is already cleared after the Patriots agreed to release Kendrick Bourne. They’ll need to create one more spot for the other waiver claim.

DeVito, 27, was thrust into a starting role as an undrafted rookie out of Syracuse in 2023 with the Giants. He went 3-3 as a starter in 2023 and started two games, going 0-2, in 2024. In his NFL career, DeVito has completed 65.3% of his passes for 1,358 yards with eight touchdowns and three interceptions in 12 games with eight starts.

Woods went undrafted out of SMU in 2024. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound cornerback spent all of last season with the Los Angeles Rams, appearing in 12 games with two tackles. He joins Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis, Marcus Jones, Alex Austin and DJ James in the Patriots’ defensive backfield.

Woods primarily played in the slot this summer with the Rams. They needed a new backup slot cornerback after seeing Marcellas Dial go down with an ACL tear in training camp.

No players waived by the Patriots were claimed on Wednesday.
