Warriors provide update on Steph Curry's sore knee, slew of injured teammates
Published in Basketball
SAN FRANCISCO – The Warriors will be without Steph Curry until at least next week.
The team announced that Curry, who will miss his 24th consecutive game with knee soreness and bone bruising on Friday, will be re-evaluated next week after the team examined his knee earlier in the day.
“The re-evaluation indicated that Curry continues to make good progress,” the statement read. “The next anticipated step in his return-to-play process will be a live 5-on-5 scrimmage in the coming days. He will be re-evaluated again next week.”
Curry will also be out of Sunday’s game in Denver. After that Nuggets game, the Warriors play their next five opponents at home.
Golden State entered Friday’s game against the Wizards sitting in the 10th seed — the final play-in spot — with a 35-38 record.
Curry’s condition had improved during the team’s recent six-game road trip, with ESPN reporting he had a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection into his right knee in order to help with swelling.
In Boston, Curry participated in pregame shooting drills for the first time since getting hurt.
He did shooting exercises from both a standstill and off movement, completing his routine several hours before tipoff.
But after being expected to take the next step – participating in full-contact scrimmages and practices – the team scaled back Curry’s work.
Even after returning to the Bay Area, Curry did not practice with the Warriors, with coach Steve Kerr saying that he simply worked individually with team doctor Rick Celebrini in another area of the facility.
Kerr and Draymond Green have both said Curry wants to return this season, but that the team is being cautious.
“I know he’ll be out there when he’s healthy, but I think that if there’s an inkling of a doubt that he’s not in the space he needs to be in, no, I don’t (think he should be out there),” Green said on Wednesday.
Kerr told reporters on Friday that, while they hope Curry can return, the Warriors will not just bring him back for the play-in.
“He needs to play some games, and we need to give him a runway if this is going to work,” Kerr said. “We are running out of games.”
Before his injury, Curry appeared well on his way to another All-NBA season. He is averaging 27.2 points per game and has scored 40 points four times in just 39 starts.
Meanwhile, Curry’s brother, Seth, has missed the past eight games with a left adductor strain. He has only played in four total games this season.
The Warriors announced Seth Curry is now day-to-day after participating in scrimmages.
Horford nears return
The Warriors’ center depth will remain thin for the time being. The team announced that Al Horford will also be re-evaluated next week and has begun light on-court work over the past few days.
Horford has missed the past eight games with a calf injury, halting what had been one of his best stretches of the season. The 39-year-old had scored in double figures in five of his last seven games, and has raised.
To combat his absence, the Warriors have signed veteran center Omer Yurtseven to two 10-day contracts.
Quinten Post, who was ruled out on Friday with an ankle injury, is now day-to-day.
