SAN FRANCISCO — For the second time in as many games, the Giants have been sunk by a four-run frame late in a ballgame.
After allowing four runs in the eighth inning of Sunday’s loss, San Francisco (3-8) allowed four runs in the top of the seventh of Monday’s 6-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies (6-4) at Oracle Park, turning a two-run lead into a two-run deficit and an eventual two-run loss.
Right-hander Adrian Houser allowed four runs over six innings in his second start as a Giant, two of those earned runs coming from the back-to-back singles he allowed in the seventh before being pulled.
Third baseman Matt Chapman bounced back from a forgettable weekwith two hits, two RBIs and a run scored. Second baseman Luis Arraez and left fielder Heliot Ramos each contributed RBIs as well.
The Giants struck first in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs off the Phillies’ talented rookie right-hander Andrew Painter. Willy Adames and Luis Arraez began the inning with a double and a single, respectively, setting the table for Chapman’s two-run triple. Rafael Devers sharply grounded out with the infield in, but Heliot Ramos drove in Chapman with a bloop single, giving San Francisco a 3-0 lead.
Arraez added on another run in the bottom of the fourth with a long sacrifice fly to drive in Harrison Bader, extending the lead to 4-0. With Houser starting his night with four scoreless innings, the Giants were well-positioned for a win.
The Phillies scored their first run of the night when Trea Turner drove in J.T. Realmuto with a groundout, then plated a second when Bryce Harper smoked a double off the second archway to bring home Justin Crawford. By inning’s end, the Giants’ lead dwindled to 4-2.
In the top of the seventh, Philadelphia turned its 4-2 deficit into a 6-4 lead. Vitello stuck with Houser, who allowed back-to-back singles to Crawford and Turner before being pulled. Left-hander Ryan Borucki couldn’t protect the lead, retiring only one of the four batters he faced.
After walking Kyle Schwarber, Harper tied the game with a two-run single and Alec Bohm gave the Phillies the lead with a run-scoring double. Right-hander Caleb Kilian replaced Borucki, allowing another run to score on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Marsh.
