President Donald Trump thinks the Republican National Committee should host a midterms convention to bolster the party’s chances of holding onto control of the House of Representatives and the Senate past 2026.

The president, who’s enjoyed strong support from Congress since returning to power in January, made his pitch on his Truth Social social media platform Wednesday.

“The Republican Party is doing really well. Millions of people have joined us in our quest to MAKE AMERICA, GREAT AGAIN,” Trump’s message began.

The President boasted about his party’s resounding victories in the 2024 election cycle and claimed the results are paying off for voters at a “record” pace.

“In that light, I am thinking of recommending a National Convention to the Republican Party, just prior to the Midterms. It has never been done before. STAY TUNED!!!” he wrote.

Party conventions traditionally take place every four years when presidential candidates are on the ballot. The GOP last held theirs in Milwaukee in July 2024 just days after Trump narrowly survived an assassination attempt. The Democrats convened in Chicago the following month, when former vice president Kamala Harris was formally named the party nominee.

Both lavish, multi-day events featured speeches from prominent political figures and celebrities. Late professional wrestler Hulk Hogan and singer Kid Rock endorsed Trump. Entrepreneur Oprah Winfrey and musician Stevie Wonder expressed support for Harris.

Political jockeying for an advantage in the 2026 midterms election was shifted into high gear last week when Texas Republicans gerrymandered the state’s electoral map to give their party five more Congressional seats.

Democrat-controlled states including California and New York have expressed a willingness to respond in kind, though any such measure in the Empire State would not go into effect in time to affect the 2026 midterms.

Maintaining control of both houses of Congress would help the Trump administration advance its legislative agenda with minimal interference.
