Trump pulls federal funding for transgender minors' gender-affirming health care
Published in Political News
Donald Trump on Tuesday afternoon signed an executive order barring any federal funds to go toward gender-affirming health care for transgender minors.
Accordingly, the order reads, “it is the policy of the United States that it will not fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support the so-called ‘transition’ of a child from one sex to another, and it will rigorously enforce all laws that prohibit or limit these destructive and life-altering procedures.”
The order states that any agency that provides grant funding to medical schools or hospitals must revoke funding unless those institutions “end the chemical and surgical mutilation of children.”
The order also gives the the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services broad authority to ensure that Medicaid and Medicare funds are not used for gender-affirming care for minors.
Children covered by federal insurance such as TRICARE — military health insurance provided by the Department of Defense — as well as Federal Employee Health Benefits, Postal Service Health Benefits, and Foreign Service Benefit Plan, will also no longer be able to access gender-affirming health care through their insurance.
In the order, Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation, Trump claims that “countless children soon regret that they have been mutilated and begin to grasp the horrifying tragedy that they will never be able to conceive children of their own or nurture their children through breastfeeding.”
Several studies have shown a vast majority of transgender people who have medically transitioned do not regret their treatment.
Just 1.4% of children between the ages of 13-17 identify as transgender, according to recent data from the UCLA Williams Institute.
