Potential flooding and high winds are set to kick off the week for Boston, before a period of chillier dry weather heading into next weekend, according to National Weather Service Forecasts.

“Rain starts to move in, heading into (Monday) morning,” said NWS meteorologist Candice Hrencecin. “(Monday) is going to be pretty rainy. And then it’s going to ramp up into the night as well.”

Boston is expected to start the week with a flood watch and high wind watch as a storm rolls through, forecasts show. The high is forecasted to reach the lower 60s Monday with the low dipping to the 40s.

NWS warns that from Sunday night through Tuesday morning flooding may occur, stating “excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations.”

The flooding may occur in “poor drainage and urban areas,” according to the weather service. Creeks and streams already “running high” may also flood.

Residents may see “brief rumbles of thunder” around Monday afternoon, Hrencecin said.

The high wind watch will kick in Monday afternoon through the night as well, warning of south winds up to 30 mph and gusts up to 60 mph possible through the period.

The gusts could “blow down trees and power lines” causing potential outages and “travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles,” NWS warns.

“All of the rain would be clearing out more so into Tuesday,” said Hrencecin. “And then after that, like the rest of the week is generally in the 40s. Let’s say the 30s on Wednesday, but we get back into the 50s by the end of the week.”

On Tuesday, showers and patchy fog are likely early in the morning, forecasts show. The weather is expected to turn mostly sunny during the day, NWS states, with a high reaching the upper 40s.

High winds are forecast to continue through Tuesday night, with gusts reaching up to 31 mph. NWS shows some winds continuing Wednesday as well, blowing up to 20 mph.

Skies are expected to remain mostly or partly sunny throughout the work week, forecasts show. Highs may reach 40 degrees Wednesday, before hitting the mid-40s Thursday and low 50s Friday.

A low preliminary chance of precipitation returns Friday night, NWS forecasts, and may continue into Saturday.
