Gadgets: Speaker is the life of any party

Published in Science & Technology News

To say the new Soundcore Rave 3S AI party speaker is the life of your party is an understatement. Just as advertised, it keeps the energy high and the music loud.

The powerful Bluetooth speaker has what seems like endless features, but first and foremost is the booming, bass-heavy sound. Producing the 200 watts of sound are three full-range 2.5-inch drivers and a single 6.5-inch woofer, which combine to produce 108dB of pure clarity in a frequency range of 45Hz to 20kHz. Soundcore lists the speaker as being able to fill a room up to 1,076 square feet with the booming sound.

The sound is crystal clear at any volume, but what makes the Rave 3S stand out is the high volumes with a bass-heavy sound. Any music genre that was put to the test produced a great sound with utmost clarity. And it gets even better when you activate Soundcore's proprietary technology BassUp feature. The technology boosts low frequencies on the fly and is perfect for bass-heavy genres like EDM, hip-hop or rock.

While the speaker sounds fantastic, the Rave 3S has many more features. The dual wireless microphone system is the top choice for karaoke fun. The 3.5 mm aux input on the back allows for the addition of an additional microphone or a guitar to enhance the performance.

The AI Vocal Removal feature will turn any sound into a karaoke track, and with the dual wireless microphones included, party attendees can let their vocals sing. AI Vocal will remove the vocals from your music (not permanently), and then you can customize the tunes to your desired sound with the Vocal Enhancer and Reverb features.

Fortunately for everyone at my house gathering, while I was testing the Rave 3S, testing the karaoke feature did not include my vocals. Instead, I enlisted some neighborhood teenagers, who successfully tested it for hours.

Obviously, sound is the most important aspect of a speaker. But to me, what makes the Rave 3S stand out is the built-in LED light show, which gives your party atmosphere a visual effect with a beat-synced lights. The HexaGlow LED lights on the front of the speaker can be programmed to sync to your music.

The lights beat, flash, pulse and cycle through a colorful show for a nightclub atmosphere. The free Soundcore companion app controls the lights, which can be customized for the atmosphere of your party.

The speaker is portable and can be brought anywhere, but it is not something you would put in a backpack. At 21.65-by-12.05-by-11.14-inch and 21.6 pounds, it has an IPX4 water-resistant rating for outdoor environments. This allows it to withstand small water splashes and light rain, but it is not waterproof, so don't take it for a swim or submerge it in water at any time.

Other features include Auracast Technology to connect multiple Rave 3S speakers (sold separately) with Bluetooth Low Energy Audio technology. The audio you send from your music source will be received and broadcast by your Auracast-compatible speakers. Soundcore says you can connect as many as you want, resulting in an even louder sound that will definitely upset your neighbors unless they are on your invite list.

A pair of Rave 3S speakers will give you true stereo sound with separate left and right channels. Pairing the speakers is done in seconds: Press the Auracast button on each unit, and they will pair automatically.

Up to 12 hours of playtime can be achieved on a single charge, depending on volume levels and your light show. All the controls are easily accessible on the top.
