Do It Yourself or Not: Install a convection wall heater
Sometimes your heating system can’t deliver heat to a room because it’s tucked away behind a wall or down a long hallway. That’s when a convection heater mounted on the wall is a good solution. It might be a chilly bathroom on a winter morning or a drafty bedroom that’s just always too cold. A convection wall heater does the job because it’s a ceramic flat panel unit plugged into a nearby electric outlet that generates heat behind the panel or between the panel and the wall making it an efficient way to naturally distribute the heat throughout the room. When space is at a premium it’s a particularly good solution because it doesn’t take up any floor space.
A homeowner can make the installation for $150, the cost of the unit compared to a handyman doing the job for $278, which includes the heater and its installation.
If you do it yourself, mount the heater about six inches above the floor molding with a 3/4-inch gap between the wall and the unit for the best results. You will need a carpenter’s level, drill and screwdriver. Just follow the installation which are straightforward. Make sure the unit will be level, using the holes in the heater or its packing material as a template to mark the position for the four mounting holes. Install the fasteners to secure it to the wall and plug it in.
