Auto review: At light speed in the Lucid Gravity -- call it CyberVan
TROY, Michigan — Mrs. Payne and I recently enjoyed “Tron: Ares,” an action-packed sci-fi movie featuring lightning-quick light bikes and glowing digital displays.
Then we climbed into our own Tron-mobile.
As I approached the 2025 Lucid Gravity SUV tester with key in pocket, the electric SUV awoke. Door handles popped out to meet us and ...Read more
Auto review: 2026 Dodge Charger Scat Pack: Two fewer cylinders, but same bad attitude
The Dodge Charger has always been an argument on wheels, preferably shouting, occasionally sideways, and often accompanied by tire smoke and poor judgment. Since 2006, when the nameplate was reintroduced after a two-decade hiatus, Dodge’s side of the argument has been simple: V-8 beats everything, and if you disagree, you’re probably French...Read more
Promised a 'battery belt,' where are the factories entering 2026?
Between 2021 and 2024, North Carolina welcomed a parade of lithium-ion battery factory projects promising to hire hundreds, if not thousands.
They were from companies you know, like Toyota, and ones you might not, like Forge Nano, Green New Energy Materials, Dai Nippon Printing and Epsilon Advanced Materials. Each was to be their manufacturer...Read more
GM reports $6 billion hit from now-unused EV investments
General Motors Co. on Thursday disclosed another $6 billion hit from unprofitable electric vehicle investments.
GM reported the loss to the Securities and Exchange Commission as what's known as an impairment charge. Impairment charges reflect assets that are not expected to bring in profits as initially expected.
Along with other EV makers, GM...Read more
Eric's Autos: 2026 Mercedes E450 Wagon
The problem with sedans is that they're impractical. Even the full-size ones have proportionately tiny trunks that make it difficult to carry both people and their things. It's not like it was once -- when big American sedans that had huge trunks were common. In fact, there are no longer any American sedans being made -- except for...Read more
Eric's Autos: 2026 Jaguar F-Pace
Jaguar has the same problem that Chrysler's dealing with. Both of these brands currently have just one new model to sell. For Chrysler, it's the Pacifica minivan. For Jaguar, it's the F-Pace, which is an SUV.
Both brands haven't got anything else to sell at the moment because they intended to be selling something different -- electric vehicles ...Read more
Eric's Autos: 2026 Lincoln Navigator
Lincoln no longer sells a full-size luxury sedan -- the kind of car that could carry five to six people in ultra-quiet comfort. That was -- for decades -- the Town Car, which Lincoln stopped selling after 2011, which was also the last year the Ford it was based on (the Crown Vic) was available.
Both of these full-size sedans were replaced by ...Read more
Eric's Autos: 2026 Buick Encore GX
Buicks aren't usually associated with affordability. Not that there's anything wrong with affordable brands. The point is that Buick is generally considered at least an almost-luxury-car brand, in the same general class as Audi, Acura and Volvo -- if not quite Lexus and Mercedes.
None of the latter sell anything that starts under $30,000.
But ...Read more
Eric's Autos: 2026 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe
It used to be that a luxury brand's least expensive model was smaller and for that reason less practical than the more expensive models. It also usually looked like the least expensive model.
The upside was the lower price.
BMW's 2 Series Gran Coupe has a different upside. It doesn't look like BMW's second-least expensive sedan, the 3 ...Read more
Eric's Autos: 2025 Ford Bronco
There are lots of SUVs on the market -- but very few 4x4s. What's the difference? Well, it's the difference between a professional fighter and a guy who hits the bag at the gym on weekends. Both throw punches. One of them hits harder.
As with professional fighters, there are only a few 4x4s in the ring.
One of them is the Ford Bronco.
What It...Read more
Eric''s Autos: 2026 Kia Carnival
Remember when minivans were as popular as crossovers and SUVs have become?
A better question might be: Why have crossovers and SUVs become so much more popular than minivans are now? The latter are objectively better in terms of practicality and utility, the two main reasons most people buy crossovers and SUVs. But minivans are roomier -...Read more
