The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has announced that there was a measles exposure this week at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

On Friday, the agency gave details of the exposure. It occurred from 10 p.m. Tuesday until 4:45 p.m. Thursday on the fifth floor of the pediatric unit in Building 4. Wesley is located at 550 N. Hillside.

The Sedgwick County Health Department is asking people who were in this area of the hospital to monitor for symptoms of fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes, tiny white spots with bluish-white centers inside the mouth and blotchy rashes on the skin.

“Measles is a respiratory disease caused by a virus. The measles virus is highly contagious and is spread through the air by breathing, coughing, or sneezing,” the KDHE said. “The measles virus can stay in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours. The signs and symptoms of measles typically begin one to two weeks after someone is exposed to an infected person.”

If symptoms occur, contact the SCHD at 316-660-5558 for further evaluation. The agency does not provide measles testing for the public.
