On Carl Sagan Day

Holiday Mathis on

"Every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lived there on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam. .... Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot." -- Carl Sagan

ARIES (March 21-April 19). Among the greatest perks of mastering a skill is how it reduces the number of decisions you have to make to get a result. Instead of wondering along the way if you should go right or left, you follow your north star with steadfast self-assurance.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). It will help to recognize that disagreements about money aren't really. The crux of the problem is deeper than dollars and more emotional than sense. Financial topics hold the seeds of insecurity. What can you do to assuage the fear?

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). An important matter gets tied up in a beautiful bow. The resolution helps you achieve that elusive balance between work and rest, an ideal often chased but rarely caught.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). Today's a dance. You'll keep it light, like hopping barefoot on hot sand -- graceful, but conscious of the heat. As long as you're moving ever-forward, you won't get burned.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You're a cat sneaking up on your own goals. The trouble is, you want the same thing many people around you want and you're all trying to be coy. You're so tuned in, you anticipate the moves of others before they make them.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). Taking offense when none was intended causes as much friction as accidentally offending. Clear communication can help avoid misunderstandings before they escalate. It's helpful to assume positive intent and address any confusion directly.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). Being anxious about other people's perceptions interferes with listening. A mind that rushes to plan what to say prevents the ears from taking in what's being said. Calm yourself to give yourself the listener's advantage.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You're playing poker with the universe today, but don't worry -- you're holding all the aces. That doesn't mean you should play them right away. When you feel pretty certain you can take all, it's more fun to draw out the game.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You're surrounded by strong personalities who want to guide your steps. You're the one who holds the map. Trust your instincts, make the call. Your decisiveness will attract admiration and loyalty.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). Your feelings have changed, and it's too soon to know what they've changed into yet. It's OK that you can't give it a name. Isn't it fun that you keep experiencing brand new aspects of what it means to be you?

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You have your own unique voice, but there are those who seem to prefer you to be their echo. What's the harm in going along? It's easier to supply this. Only give your real opinion to those who can appreciate, listen and learn from it.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Nothing gets by you. You're a detective solving a mystery where the clues are whispered in passing and you catch them all. It doesn't mean you'll immediately have the big answers, but you're definitely building a file.

TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Nov. 9). Socializing for fun will further an ambition. New work broadens your perspective, gives you advantages including access to people you've long admired. And though there's no roadmap for the new territory, your inner GPS works perfectly all year. More highlights: Love brings peculiar surprises, education will be free and you'll be gifted a trip. Aries and Aquarius adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 8, 5, 18, 20 and 32.

CELEBRITY PROFILES: Celebrated annually on his Scorpio birthday, Nov. 9, Carl Sagan Day honors the Scorpio scientist's contribution to science communication and his passion for exploring the mysteries of the cosmos. Today the Carl Sagan Institute continues the search for habitable planets and extraterrestrial life, making strides in astrobiology and space research and keeping Sagan's starry vision alive by pushing the boundaries of what we know about the universe.
