White to Play
Published in Chess Puzzles
Today we have a real challenge for you. White has an attacking position. That should be clear. The question is what is the best way to proceed? The game started with a Dragon Sicilian 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 g6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.Be3 Bg7 7.Bc4 0–0 8.Bb3 d6? (Too slow. Black has to play the thematic equalizing move 8...d5!)9.f3 a6? (Again, too slow. He needs to be more aggressive with 9...Qa5)10.Qd2 Qc7 11.0–0–0 Na5 (Now a typical anti-Dragon attack is launched by White.)12.h4 Bd7 13.h5 Rfc8 14.hxg6 hxg6 15.Bh6 Bh8 (SEE DIAGRAM) Your task is to figure out the first key move, but several follow-up moves.
16.Bf8!! Nxb3+ 17.axb3 Rxf8 18.Rxh8+! Kxh8 19.Qh6+ Kg8 20.Nd5! Nxd5 20...Bh3 21.Nf5 Bxf5 22.Nxf6+ exf6 23.Rh1 21.Rh1 and wins. I hope it was instructive for you and that you played through the whole game. The actual game, Waskan-Serebrjakow, Riga, 1965, ended on White’s 20th move.
