White or Black to Play

Pete Tamburro on

Published in Chess Puzzles

A weekend bonus problem from 1846. Whether it is White or Black to move, it’s a mating attack.

A composition by W. Bone. White to Play goes this way- 1.Qa8+ Kxa8 2.Bc6+ Ka7 2...Kb8 3.Rxd8+ Ka7 4.Ra8# 3.Ra1+ Kb8 4.Ra8# and with Black to Play it goes this way- 1...Rxh2+ 2.Kxh2 Qh4+ 3.Nh3 Qg3+ 4.Kg1 Qxg2# A pretty clever two for one.
