A great weekend puzzle here. Black is going to queen a pawn, so what can White do here? I mined this gem of a composition from Paul Motwani’s S*T*A*R* CHESS book. He intersperses the games he goes over with wonderful problems. His whole series is spectacular.
This was a composition by Leonid Kubbel in 1923. 1.Nf3!! gxf3 1...Kg8 2.Kxg4 Kf7 3.Bd2 Kf6 4.Nxd4 2.Kf6 Kg8 The hidden gem of a move that makes this composition so delightful is found here-- 2...e1Q 3.Kf7 Qe5 4.g4!! and the queen only has a move off the mating diagonal or giving up the queen. 3.Bd2 Kf8 4.Kxe6 Ke8 5.Kd5 Kd7 6.Kxd4 Kc6 7.Ke3 Kxb6 8.Kxf3 Kc5 9.Kxe2 Kd4 10.f4 b5 11.f5 Ke5 12.g4 with an easy win
