'Police Woman' and 'White Shadow' actor Ed Bernard, dead at 86

NEW YORK — Actor Ed Bernard, who co-starred in the 1970s television dramas “Police Woman” and “The White Shadow,” has died. He was 86.
The longtime character actor’s family said Bernard died on Jan. 23 in Northridge, California, according to the Hollywood Reporter. No cause of death was announced.
Bernard’s first screen credit appeared in the 1971 classic “Superfly.”
The Philadelphia native appeared on TV crime shows “Mannix” and “Kojak” before landing the role of undercover cop Joe Styles in “Police Woman” starring Angie Dickinson. He worked on 90 episodes of that popular network program between 1974 and 1978, according to IMDb.
Bernard then acted in more than 30 episodes of the Bruce Paltrow-produced basketball show “The White Shadow” between 1978 and 1980.
The Philadelphia native went on to appear in dozens of television programs throughout his career including “What’s Happening!” “Mork & Mindy,” “T.J. Hooker,” “Doogie Howser M.D.” and “NYPD Blue.”
He his last credit was in a pair 2005 episodes of the Philadelphia-based CBS detective show “Cold Case,” according to IMDb.
No cause of death was reported. The Hollywood Reporter said Bernard is survived by his sons, Edward and Mark Bernard, and several grandchildren. His wife of 44, Shirley Mae Bernard, years died in 2005.
Deadline said Thursday that a statement from his family remembered their patriarch as a man of faith and a foodie “who loved sushi and healthy cooking.”
