Television Q&A: Has Food Network really closed 'The Kitchen'?

You have questions. I have some answers.

Q: Some weeks back I thought I saw that “The Kitchen” was leaving the Food Network and that sometime in December would be its last show. Since then, it continues to be on Food Network with some episodes listed in my onscreen guide as "new" on Saturday mornings. Is it leaving or not?

A: The Food Network series, which began in 2014, has ended production. The last new episode was on Dec. 13. The show is still airing Saturdays but, according to the network's own listings, those telecasts are reruns. I can't explain exactly why your onscreen guide marks some as new, except to say it happens sometimes with shows; I have seen the same error on other shows in my own onscreen guide.

Q: We haven't seen new episodes of “Matlock” and “Elsbeth” for the longest time. What’s going on?

A: The network appears to have put a lot of shows on a long break because of holiday-season programming, to avoid pitting new episodes against Winter Olympics telecasts (which will run Feb. 6-22). But CBS shows will be returning, including “FBI” on Feb. 23; all three “NCIS” shows on Feb. 24; “Survivor” on Feb. 25; “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage,” “Ghosts,” "Matlock” and “Elsbeth” on Feb. 26; “Sheriff Country,” “Fire Country” and “Boston Blue” on Feb. 27; and “Tracker” and Watson” on March 1.

Q: Can you tell me if Kelly Ripa is bringing her game show with her father back again?

A: For those of you tuning in late, that’s “Generation Gap,” in which family members from different generations teamed up to compete against other pairs in pop culture challenges. Ripa hosted with her father, Joe Ripa, featured. The series ran for two seasons in the summer of 2022 and 2023. There have not been any new episodes since then, but neither has there been an official cancellation.

Q: We have really enjoyed the PBS series “Bookish.” Will there be a second season?

A: Yes. The series, created by and starring Mark Gatiss, takes viewers to “the chaotic and dangerous shadows of post-war 1946 London, where Gabriel Book’s encyclopedic knowledge of literature and history makes him an invaluable — if unconventional — consultant to the local police,” says PBS. “With razor-sharp wit and an entourage of charming social misfits, Book helps unravel London’s most puzzling mysteries by turning to the thousands of books lining his shelves.” The first season wraps up its U.S. telecasts on Feb. 15, with a second season coming overseas — and eventually stateside.

Q: Will “The Abandons” be renewed?

A: No. The warring-families Western sounded promising, with a cast including Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson and with Kurt Sutter (“Sons of Anarchy,” “The Shield”) as its creator. But Netflix decided to drop it after a single season amid reports of declining ratings and off-camera conflicts; Deadline.com noted “talk about friction between Sutter and the top stars … over storylines, level of collaboration and communication,” and Sutter left the show before production was completed.
