BALTIMORE — The fifth episode of the docuseries on Adnan Syed is to premiere on HBO Max Thursday evening, which is poised to chronicle the journey of his release from prison.

Syed, the subject of the first season of the podcast Serial who was convicted for the 1999 killing of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, was resentenced earlier this year to time served plus five years of supervised probation.

He was 17 at the time of Lee’s death.

Syed was initially sentenced to life in prison. He was released in 2022, and remains on supervised probation.

According to an email from HBO Documentary Films, Thursday’s episode will depict Syed’s “personal journey from incarceration to freedom,” and his reunion with members of his family after over 20 years in prison.

Through an investigation on the part of his attorney, Erica J. Suter with support from former Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn J. Mosby, new details into the initial prosecution will be revealed, including undisclosed evidence that points to other potential suspects, suppressed witness testimony and DNA from the crime scene that has gone untested, the email reads.

The episode is to premiere on HBO Max Thursday, Sept. 18, at 9 p.m.
