White House chief of staff Susie Wiles has been diagnosed with “early stage” breast cancer but is expected to make a full recovery, President Donald Trump announced Monday.

The main gatekeeper and trusted adviser for Trump will be able to continue working through the treatment, he said.

“She has a fantastic medical team, and her prognosis is excellent! During the treatment period, she will be spending virtually full time at the White House,” Trump wrote on his social media site.

Trump announced Wiles’ diagnosis to media gathered at a public meeting of the Kennedy Center board, where she sat next to her boss on the dais.

“She announced a minor difficulty but she’s going to be in good shape,” Trump said. “The faster the better.”

Wiles, 68, is the first woman ever to serve as White House chief of staff.

“I am deeply thankful for the support and encouragement of President Trump as I undergo treatment and continue serving in my current role,” Wiles said.

The longtime fixture in Florida Republican politics has played a pivotal role in Trump’s inner circle for years. She was one of a handful of aides to stay by his side after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol and served as campaign manager for his 2024 campaign.

Wiles noted that the diagnosis puts her in a position that is not uncommon for working women, with an estimated 300,000 American women getting a breast cancer diagnosis each year, according to the National Institutes of Health.

“Every day, these women continue to raise their families, go to work and serve their communities with strength and determination,” Wiles said. “I now join their ranks.”

Breast cancer treatment varies depending on how early the cancer is caught but usually involves either removing the tumor, followed by radiation, or removal of the breast tissue if needed.

Political allies and rivals alike credit Wiles with imposing a much-needed degree of order on Trump’s sometimes-chaotic approach to working with aides and unofficial advisers.

Wiles mostly shuns the spotlight, which seems to suit Trump as he seeks to craft his own messages to the nation, world and his loyal base of political supporters.

She raised some eyebrows last December with a frank Vanity Fair interview in which she said Trump has an “alcoholic’s personality” and made critical remarks about some administration leaders including Vice President JD Vance and Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Trump shrugged off the controversial interview and gave her a fresh vote of confidence after it came out, underlining the closeness of his relationship with Wiles.
