BALTIMORE — Baltimore County prosecutors dropped on Friday nearly two dozen charges against a public school gym teacher accused of sexually abusing two students, court records show.

According to the Maryland Judiciary, the case against Roger Myers was dismissed less than a month before he was scheduled for trial on 11 felonies and 11 misdemeanors, including six counts of sexual abuse of a minor and 12 sex offenses.

Myers, who taught physical education at Deep Creek Middle School in Essex, worked at Baltimore County Public Schools for almost 30 years, in both middle and high schools. He has since sued his former employer, arguing that their decision to terminate him last summer came after his retirement had begun.

Attorney Anton Iamele, who’s represented Myers in his dismissed criminal and active civil cases, was not immediately able to respond to a comment request Monday morning.

Neither were Baltimore County State’s Attorney Scott Shellenberger and prosecutor Zarena Sita, the latter of whom was leading Myers’ matter in circuit court.

Myers was arrested on May 30, about a month before his retirement was scheduled to begin, after Baltimore County Police Detectives spoke to more than a dozen students upset by Myers’ allegedly inappropriate behavior at school. According to charging documents, that included suggestive or racist remarks about the kids’ bodies and personal lives, and police said several students called him “creepy” and rude.

The teacher was also accused of sexually abusing two female students during the school day.

Representatives for Baltimore County Public Schools were not immediately able to respond to a comment request Monday morning.
