A search-and-rescue operation was underway Friday in Haiti after a Florida-based aircraft carrying two Americans was reported missing in the southern region of the country.

Hero Client Rescue launched two helicopters carrying four Haitian SWAT police officers and two medics to search for the aircraft, which was reported two have two U.S. citizens aboard, after the plane did not arrive in Les Cayes after taking off from the Grand’Anse region on Thursday in bad weather.

The Christian nonprofit Agape Flights, based in Venice, on Florida’s Gulf Coast, said it lost contact on Thursday afternoon with one of its planes, an Embraer 110 Bandeirante with the registration number N316AF, while it was flying over the mountains near Jérémie.

“At this current time, we do not have further information,” the Christian aid organization said in a post on its Facebook page. “We ask for prayers for the pilots and their families, and for the entire family of Agape Flights during this incredibly difficult time.”

The nonprofit also requested “privacy for the families as they navigate these moments with courage and grace.”

In a press release, the nonprofit added: “Agape Flights is actively working to gather further details and to determine the circumstances. As the situation develops, verified information will be released as appropriate.”

Agape Flights has been flying to the Caribbean for 46 years, serving more than 300 mission partners throughout the region and helping with relief efforts in times of crisis, including the recent Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica and Cuba.. The supplies vary from medicin and food to items like car parts.

“We work to help our mission partners serve the people of the Caribbean in the best way possible. We serve Christ by serving His missionaries,” a spokesperson said.

Haitian authorities reported there was heavy rain in the area during the time the flight was in the air. There were unconfirmed reports that the wreck was found in the area of Mouline.
