Two memorial highway signs for Charlie Kirk erected in Florida's Lake County

ORLANDO, Fla. — Two memorial highway signs for slain political activist Charlie Kirk were erected on both ends of Schofield Road in Lake County on Wednesday, the result of a push from the Lake County Board of County Commissioners to honor Kirk following his assassination last month.
Kirk, a prominent conservative activist, was fatally shot Sept. 10 while speaking at an event on the campus of Utah Valley University.
On Sept. 23, the Lake County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to support a resolution that would designate Schofield Road as the Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway.
Commissioner Anthony Sabatini, who brought forth the resolution, called Kirk “one of the most famous and respected members of my generation” and “one of the greatest Americans who has ever lived” during the board meeting.
Sabatini initially identified Wellness Way as the location for the memorial signs, given its status as a prominent road that many people in Central Florida know and travel every day, but ultimately settled on lesser-known Schofield Road at the suggestion of Commissioner Sean Parks.
Schofield Road stretches just over 6.5 miles from 5 Mile Road in Lake County to Avalon Road in Orange County. The two signs were placed on each end of the Lake County portion of Schofield Road, one near the 5 Mile Road entrance and the other at the Lake County and Orange County border just over 5 miles away.
While the name of the road will remain Schofield Road for addressing and title purposes, the memorial highway designation appears on a distinctive brown sign reminiscent of other memorial highway signs across the county and state.
The Melbourne City Council rejected a similar effort to rename a roadway for Kirk shortly after the Lake County decision.
