New charges have been filed against the suspect in a molotov cocktail firebomb attack at a rally for Israeli hostages in Boulder, Colorado, earlier this month after an 82-year-old victim died from her injuries.
The Boulder County district attorney’s office announced Monday that Karen Diamond died as a result of “the severe injuries that she suffered in the attack” on June 1 and were amending and upgrading charges against suspect Mohammed Sabry Soliman, an Egyptian national, to include first-degree murder.
Soliman, 45, is now charged with two counts of first-degree murder (both pertaining to Diamond’s death), 52 counts of attempted first-degree murder, eight counts of first-degree assault, 18 counts of attempted first-degree assault, two counts of third-degree assault, two counts of using an incendiary device, 16 counts of attempted use of an incendiary device and one count of animal cruelty.
He is also facing 12 federal hate crime and explosives charges. He could spend the rest of his life in prison if convicted.
“This horrific attack has now claimed the life of an innocent person who was beloved by her family and friends,” district attorney Michael Dougherty said in a statement Monday. “Our hearts are with the Diamond family during this incredibly difficult time.
“Our office will fight for justice for the victims, their loved ones, and the community. Part of what makes Colorado special is that people come together in response to a tragedy; I know that the community will continue to unite in supporting the Diamond family and all the victims of this attack.”
The amended complaint also added additional names as victims, bringing the number of people targeted in the attack to 29. The number of victims in the attack, which ranged in age from 25 to 88, grew following further investigation.
Shortly after Soliman’s arrest, the Department of Homeland Security announced his family had been taken into ICE custody and would face expedited deportation proceedings.
