Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are lending their voice to the U.S. presidential election and urging voter registration, a week after Donald Trump and Kamala Harris faced off in their first televised debate.

In honor of National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, the Sussexes released a statement via their Archewell Foundation, stressing the importance of Americans heading to the polls.

“Voting is not just a right; it’s a fundamental way to influence the fate of our communities,” the statement said. “Civic engagement, no matter one’s political party, is at the heart of a more just and equitable world. By participating in initiatives like this, we aim to amplify the message that every voice matters. ... Together, let’s make sure every eligible voter is informed and empowered to participate in shaping America’s future.”

The charity said its team had also sent personalized letters to unregistered voters using Vote Forward’s letter-writing tool to encourage them to register to vote.

Meghan Markle, the British heir and their two young children have lived in Markle’s native California since stepping back from senior royal duties in early 2020. But Harry only officially claimed the U.S. as his residence in April, when he filed official paperwork declaring America his new home country.

News of that declaration came shortly after Harry told "Good Morning America" he’d considered taking the plunge and obtaining American citizenship, though he determined it’s “not ... a high priority for me right now.”
