Tech review: Three gift ideas for the home office or dorm room
Published in Business News
I’ve got a few things I’ve been testing that would make great additions for a home office or dorm room.
Getting comfortable with your office furniture and equipment is essential for productivity.
Boulies OP300 Ergonomic Chair
When I was in college (back in the days before personal computers), we had small built-in desks in our dorm rooms with really uncomfortable wooden chairs. It never occurred to me to bring my own chair.
I’ve been testing the Boulies OP300 Ergonomic Chair for about a month and I have to fight my wife for it most days.
Available in two styles — mesh back or padded back — the OP300 adjusts quickly and easily to help you find just the right seating position for maximum comfort.
The heart of the OP300 is its multi-tilt mechanism. It allows for the backrest to recline so you can sit up to focus and sit back to rest.
You can adjust the seat depth to keep your legs supported along with the seat angle and rocking function.
The backrest is adjustable to keep your spine comfortable, and the cushy headrest adjusts to support your head or neck for reading or relaxing. The seat bottom is wide enough for my big frame and the chair has a weight capacity of 265 pounds.
The armrests are adjustable for height, depth and angle. I wish they’d lock solidly in place, but they did tend to rotate a bit freely when I moved my arms.
The included casters roll well enough on hard floors, but I swapped them out for a set of rubber roller blade-style wheels I had on hand.
I tested the mesh chair, but I don’t think you’d go wrong with either fabric choice.
The OP300 lists for $369 from boulies.com, but there’s a summer discount code that drops the price to $299.99.
ESR Qi2 3-in-1 Watch Wireless Charger with CryoBoost
I like keeping my phone charged, but always within arm’s reach.
The ESR Qi2 30-in-1 wireless charger works an iPhone’s MagSafe connector to keep the phone at the right angle to keep an eye on any notifications while it charges.
Note this charger holds the phone in place with a strong magnet, so if your phone doesn’t have MagSafe, you’ll need a MagSafe-enabled case that has a metal ring. I was able to add a thin stick-on metal ring to the iPhone 16e that doesn’t have MagSafe.
Andoid phones can also use this charger if they support Qi wireless charging and have a metal ring.
It can wirelessly charge at 15 watts, and as the name implies, the 3-in-1 also has a wireless charging pad for AirPods and an Apple watch charger.
I have one of these chargers on my nightstand and my iPhone, AirPods Pros and Apple watch land there every night.
The watch charger is removable, so you can leave it off if you don’t have an Apple watch.
This charger is available with CryoBoost, which is a built-in fan that keeps the back of your phone cooler, which is better for the battery’s longevity.
This is the kind of charger that’s easy to love. It does its job well and once you have it set up, you don’t have to worry about it.
It ships with a USB wall charger and a USB-C cable.
The charger is available in black or white and it costs $79.99 from esrtech.com or Amazon, but don’t be shocked if it is on sale for a bit less.
EKSAtelecom S30 Open-Ear Air Conduction True Wireless Headset
At my office, we use Microsoft Teams as our telephones. This means all our phone calls go through Teams, usually through our desktop or laptop computers. We use headsets of all types to make our calls.
I’ve been testing the S30 Open-Ear headset from EKSAtelecom. The S30 does not have a piece that fits into your ear canal. Instead, the S30 uses an over-the-ear hook design, and a tiny speaker sits at the outside of your ear.
This design means you are not isolated from outside sounds. Anything that’s going on around you will still be heard. This makes the S30 ideal for office use, where the environment is not too loud.
The left earpiece has a boom microphone that can rotate toward your mouth when you are using it, or out of the way when you are off the phone.
Each earpiece has a button for play/pause of music or to pick up or hang up calls.
The S30 comes with a nice zipper case for travel and with a large charging base to put on your desk. The base has a battery that can also charge the earpieces when you are away from your desk.
The S30 battery life is very good. It takes two hours to charge them with the included USB-C cable. They’ll last for 16 hours of listening or nine hours of talking.
The boom mic uses AI noise canceling that really does a good job of cutting out almost all external sounds.
My one gripe is the audio quality. These are not the best for listening to music. There are no equalizer settings or ways to adjust the sound.
The audio quality is good for voice calls and listening to podcasts, but the audio quality for music doesn’t measure up to my AirPods or Beats. I also wish they were a bit louder.
Their main advantages are comfort and long battery life.
These are available from eksatelecom.com for $149.99.
